Grieving has it's place, but it doesn't put food on the table. That is the reality for most thais. They do not have the welfare system that the west has.

As an added note: if you see the ocean retract..run for high ground. Don't go for the free fish.

On Jan 1 I cancelled my reservations at Tharapatong for Jan 3 arrival.

I received an email the other day notifying me my three nights deposit less bank charges will be credited within a week. BTW the cancellation policy was 30 days.

I did not request the refund. I will support these people on my next trip.

come on BigD.
your'e not a Phuket man but are one of those people who believes the worst after seeing news reports.
the Media have been a bit naughty in their coverage and making things look like everywhere is destroyed.
just listen to the people who are there and believe what they say because they see things evolving.

Calzoid.
no anti American chat from me,just my answer to what BigD said.
great to know that you are going back and helping the locals get back on their feet, they need all the help all the visitors can provide.
but I think I must defend Hugh a little because since 9/11 many/some (not all Americans) have taken the terrorist thing to heart.
they seem to think they are the only target but forget that they never really suffered any terrorist action in the past.

try living in the UK when the IRA was active or living in Israel or Iran now when bombs go off every day killing many innocent victims.......

had to have a bit of a rant but I lost friends in Patong and another in a bombing in Guildford,England.
i am personally affected.

but back to the post.
people I work with know know I used to go to Thailand and tell me that they feel sorry for me because the WHOLE Country is destroyed.
i try to explain that only a small part was affected and that it is still a holiday destination.
but some are due to fly to Australia with a stopover in BKK and are thinking of cancelling because to them BKK has been wiped off the face of the earth.
no matter how much I try and tell them that all is fine in BKK they are so worried about another Tsunami hitting while they are there.

why the f*** do not people who know f*** all not listen?....

Nokna - good points.
Unfortunately most people rely on the Media to inform them on what is going on around the world - the UK has a travel advisory against going to Phuket and from what I have read have suspended direct flights.

Its sad that the many are reliant on words from the few. Its the sheep and shephard philosophy - there are many sheep all over the world who would jump of a cliff if the shephard points them that way. I agree there are many Americans that are still a bit gun shy - all the media and politicians keep the 911 rhetoric active to sway the sheep thier way - they are the least likely to travel out of the country anyway. But there are also many of us who are uneffected by politics and pave our own way.

I personally do not like political discussions and I do not judge a country based on the actions/statements of one person or a select few. I like everyone till they piss on my leg.

I praise Thailand for responding quickly to the devestation and getting back up and running - fortunately the media is starting to praise them as well.

I can't wait to grab a Singha, a BG and a Jetski and bounce around the georgeous blue green waters of Phuket - and no I wont wear white gym sox with black shorts and flip flops - nor will I ask for Ketchup for my Pad Tai

3 weeks and counting.

It kills me when I see people butcher local foods trying to make it taste like home.

I was once in Florence and walked by Mcdonalds and could not believe all the farangs inside. I walked in and lectured a group of college students about travelling abroad - they thought I was nuts - I asked how the hell could they eat Mcdonals when some of the best food in the world was at thier disposal for the same $. They could not respond and looked down shamefully - it was hysterical.

I have a horrendous hangover - the RT last night severely damaged some brain cells - just had Pad Thai for breakfast - nap - massage- then a cute BG should cure this massive hangover.

Peace

yes, I've had similar tirades with the sailors who were eating Mickey Ds in Pattaya, or in Hong Kong

WTF is the point of eating food from home (or like home) when you are in a foreign country ??

and you are SO right, the Italian food served outside in Florence would have been Much better than the Mickey Ds junk they were paying high prices for

Nokna,

shame on you, LOL

nokna,

I've been to Phuket twice and had a good time there and will go again sometime in the future.

I just don't feel comfortable going someplace on vacation where so many have died recently.

After I returned from Phuket to Bangkok on dec. 27, something in my brain was keep telling me to go back to Patong Beach, so I did on january 4. Went swimming in the blue Andaman Sea again without too many people around, no obstructive umbrellas or beachloungers, no parasailing, no jetski's. Just perfect to me.

Now, I'm back home in Belgium again and have contacted Thai Airways to book that promotional airfare to Phuket on April 29 !
I've heard that my second home in Phuket, Patong Villa, has re-opened already by now. Can't wait to be back were I belong.

Hopefully all of you follow quickly to paradise as well.

Eddy

Calzoid, I salute you for your comments re foreign nationals going to countries where the cuisine is exquisite and demanding the rubbish that their own country produces. Why, even on this forum there was a thread about where the best burgers or English breakfast could be bought, when in a recent poll on British TV, Thai food came 4th ahead of Chinese, Japanese and Indian food.
And good for you too that you will soon be returning to Phuket. I expect that like some of us who love the Thais and Phuket, you know that there comes a time when real friends have to stand up and be counted and put personal considerations into a secondary position. Any small discomforts or minor inconveniences are outweighed by the satisfaction that one is doing something positive and concrete to help those others less fortunate than us. You will be treated royally by the locals, I promise you.
As for others' comments regarding their reticence to visit places where others have died recently, well it's a free World and people can spend their money freely, going where they will. Unfortunately, life is unpredictable and the poor people who were enjoying a carefree holiday in Phuket on Christmas Day, could not know what was about to happen less than 24 hours afterwards. One thing is for sure about Phuket though; there will not be another Tsunami in that region for probably another few centuries. Other places have their share of massive floods, fires, landslides, tornados and hurricanes caused by nature, or atrocities caused by mankind. I'm sure that Bali seemed like paradise a year or two ago, as did the Seychelles. My daughter was actually up one of the twin towers of the World Trade Centre exactly a year before 911.
Bognor Regis looks increasingly more attractive. But any place on this planet that doesn't suffer from any potential disaster, is just too boring for words and not worth visiting.
And cheers to you too, Asianatic. I admire your spirit. You're a man after my own heart.
