The locals just ignore the limo taxi mafia who provide just about the worst experience you will find on Phuket. But tourists unfortunately are usually not informed about the availability of meter taxis. Well thanks to our former Phuket governor, at least you can see the meter taxi sign when you exit the terminal. They used to be stationed outside the airport grounds.

when I lived in Phuket in 2004...I had to make trips back to bkk every month and some months 2 or 3 times for sales meetings.... I would always tell people I sat with on the plane and struck up converstaion that either I could drop them (if they were staying near my house) or to just follow me outside and I would direct them to the taxi stand that was to the left near the main road, I forgot the name... However, I understand the taxi stand still exists but has moved to another location.....they had a 50baht sir charge but it was still about 300baht into Patong or Rawaii...far cheaper than the mafia quotes in the airport.... BTW...I have a good story about one group that took me up on my offer for a ride..... I cut them up and poured acid on their body parts in my bathtub...it was great!!!! kidding of course... but lets just say the last farang girl I was ever with came from one of those lifts...you know the whole "thank you so much...its so nice to meet someone that knows the island...what are you doing tonight? maybe you could show my friend and I some cool places?..translation..I dont like thai men and am getting zero attention from white guys here..please do me atl

I arrived this WE in Phuket airport with Tiger Airways at around 10pm and no more cars were available at the metered taxi stand. This was due to the late time or maybe high season (December). Needless to say, the Limousine guys were having a tremendous time... I finally paid 55O THB for a dedicated taxi, which is actually still fair. However, the attendant guy outside told me 5 min waiting time, which transformed into almost 1 hour! In the meantime, other drivers were charging up to 450 THB for a batch minibus ride to Patong as a french tourist girl told me, and probably as always trying to redirect to another hotel that pays them a commission... Anyway, next time I will choose either an earlier flight or book a cab in advance (assuming they know how to keep a booking) ! The Limousine service number one of the guy gave me on his business card is +66 (0) 89 247 5468. There is also a metered taxi number at the start of this thread. It would be helpful if anyone could add more metered taxi numbers... Cheers, latrell

I see a lot of references to airport limos attempting to steer people to other hotels. Does this include metered taxis or do they operate like most taxis and take you to where you're paying them to go?

They are normally OK (Airport Limos), they may ask you if you have a Hotel but I have never had a problem getting to the Hotel of choice. They can do some other annoying shit though. They often (1 trip in 2) stop at their Office for 5-10 minutes which is about two thirds the way to Patong from the Airport to do something? Never really found out what but I assume its to pick up there pay for the day & as I am probably there last trip today as it only seems to happen on the late night trips! Also 1 in 3 seem to stop for Fuel, annoying when your only staying a short time!

Report from The Nation dated Monday 13 August 2007 :- Express limousine shuttle van services launched for Phuket airport ================================================= Phuket - The Phuket provincial administration Sunday launched a special shuttle van service between the Phuket International Airport and downtown. Phuket deputy governor Tri Akkaradecha chaired the ceremony to launch the service of Phuket Vehicle Service Cooperative. Tri said the van service was launched following tourists' complaints that existing bus services were slow and often delayed as bus drivers often stopped on the way to wait for more passengers or to try to sell tourism packages to the tourists. Manote Chusak, president of the cooperative, said the service started with five vans leaving from the airport to the downtown every hour.

I read that full article in the Phuket Gazette, and I might have misread it, but if you look really closely I think the new service only applies to trips to Phuket City and there is only 1 van that runs 1 time per hour. The service is "mostly Thais and he hopes more tourists will start to use it." Not sure why there is the discrepancy between the 2 papers (phuket Gazette says 1, the nation says 5 vans). I could be proven wrong, but I think all the bold statements about not stopping at the tourist agency and fining the drivers, etc. etc. only applies to the 1 van going to Phuket city. If you are going to Patong, I think you can still expect a stopover at the tourist agency.
