"I notice the report said no mobile phone connections available.
I have spoken to 3 people in Phuket (all in Kathu) this morning already"

Calls to and from Phuket have been OK all day, but calling between two mobiles on the island has been pretty much impossible all day. Landlines have so far been OK where I am. I live in the center of the island, on the other side of the hills from Patong, Karon and Kata. I didn't actually know about any of this untill I went out at about noon for a spot of shopping and nearly got run down by an ambulance. I then went to Chalong, and noticed that the road leading to Kata, Karon and Patong was blocked off by the police. My initial thoughts was that it was the usual VIP-thing that happens quite regularly here - somebody who knows someone important has the roads blocked for their motorcade. When I came back to my house, I found a large number of people hanging around at a school a couple of hundred meters from my house, and asked a couple of girls what was up. They told me "big water in Patong, 500 people dead!!!" One of them then asked where I lived, and when I told her "right around the corner", she smiled and said "I go with you!" (...no, I didn't take her up on that, my GF would be rather cross if I had....). So, even though I live less than 5 km in a straight line from Patong Beach, it's been a pretty ordinary Sunday here, apart from a bunch of ambulances and some homeless people, that is. I have to watch it on TV...

...i was just watching and listening to an English tourist talking to Sky news from Phuket, and he said, he was on the 5th floor of the hotel, and as he looked down into the pool, there was a tuk tuk and a shark there...!

I'm booked to go Phuket in Mid Feb, and also to Phi Phi, and have every intention of going, least not to help the tourism recover!

My thoughts and best wishes are with the people at this time of need...

never been to Phuket (pattaya man myself)..
But This is just shocking.. Living in Japan we get Tsunami warnings all the time, most of which end up being 1 meter ot less..I couldn't imagine a 10 meter wave hitting!

My heart goes out to everyone in all effected countries.
Mother nature has her reasons.. thats all I can say.. Don't mess with her as she is ALL pwerful!!

Latest reports on U.S. media puts death toll at 8700 plus across South Asia. Unbelievable. One of the videos running now is from Phi Phi and the area is a mess. Hard to believe anything or anyone could have survived. I remember on my trip to Koh Phi Phi that we stopped at a small muslim fishing village built over the water. A series of small huts basically connected with boards. I wonder if there is anything left of that small fishing village.

The village that you refer to is Koh Panyi....there's a good chance it'd be OK as it would be protected by Phuket, which Phi Phi is not.

I've heard that the 1st born son on the first born daughter of the King is missing in Khao Lak, Phang Nga. I have several friends living and workking in Khao Lak. They have so far been uncontactable.

Just came back from a little bike-ride into the disaster-zone. The beach road shops in Karon look like something on the West Bank and the road is covered in sand. Pretty impressive considering there's a high sea-barrier at the southern end of that road. You can't even see the sea from the road, but the wave went over this barrier and still carried enough of a punch to devastate the area behind it.
Patong looks even worse. It's mostly blacked out - no surprise there - and the beach road looks more like the beach now...thick with sand. Saw a bus on it's side and a lot of very (!) secondhand cars. Wanted to go down to Soi Bang-la, but go redirected by some security guards. The army is there too, checking out who comes and goes, presumably to prevent looting. There were actually a couple of bars open on Song Roi Pee Rd., but nothing near them main strip. Both in the hills between Karon and Patong, and again between Patong and Kathu there were a lot of cars parked, probably to keep them safe from the expected after-shock. On the Patong-Kathu hill road I even saw a lot of people camping at the road-side.
Another thing I noticed was an unusually large number of the familiar chalk outlines on the road...must have been a fair few accidents in the ensuing panic after the wave hit.
