Official word, so far, is it was an 9.0 earthquake, however what happened was a 1000km stretch of the sea-floor moved (or dropped), which caused this huge tsunami. I'm going to post the link USGS Earthquake Hazards homepage to the planet. Click the area where it took place and you will see there were a string of about 60+ Earthquakes and aftershocks on the full stretch of the islands at Sumatra and north East of Thailand and Burma. We are seeing upwards of 23 earthquakes that are in the 6+ scale zone. One is in the 7's.

I must say, although there is never a good time for an earthquake and tsunami of this nature, at least it happened during morning daylight and when a majority were asleep in their hotels. Imagine if this took place when the bar-beers were full or at night.

There is certainly a need for a tsunami warning system required like in Japan. There was a 1 hour window for the tsunami to hit Phuket and Patpong from the 8.9 quake. Plenty of time to evacuate. No warning system, unfortunately.

Good luck all!

Hi Yurune.
i hope your friends are alright, like you I know people there and I hope they are all safe.
saw the pics of Soi Eric and I hope our mutual friends business is not too damaged.
this is a terrible blow to the tourist industry in the area and even though it will cost milions to put right, let's hope they soon get back to normal.....but TIT....
let's hope there are more people like Addy who says he will still be visiting the area.
one person will not make a difference, but everyone who returns will be helping in someway.
shame on the people who only think of themselves and have already cancelled visits........

my sympathies go to all the dead and missing, wether they are Thai or Foreign.
and let's not forget all the businesses which have been wiped out.
it will be hard for them as I expect many of them had no sort of Insurance.

Manuel.
sorry to hear of your misfortune, hope you are OK though....

just imagine what the carnage would have been like if this had happened at 11pm..........

I know what you're saying, but, I'm supposed to be flying out to Phuket for New Year's Eve, and realistically, I'm not sure I'll be able to, be allowed to, and more importantly that I should go. Does the area really need tourists arriving right now to put a burden on their infrastructure? I spoke to a girl I know there this afternoon (she sounded absolutely terrified and was expecting another wave), and things sound pretty grim.

Right now, I hope I can go, and I hope that the poor sods there right now can get things working out there, but I pretty doubtful I'll be able to get there.

Last thing Phuket needs is tourist arriving for a vacation. I would think two or three months from now most damage will be fixed.

I would change my plans now and go somewhere else in LOS.

This is a quote from the U.K. Telegraph online newspaper
Either they have some crazy reporters or it will be much worse than any of us dared to imagine. I for one hope it's the former :

Thousands missing in Thai resorts

British holidaymakers may be among the almost 300 people killed in the devastation in south Thailand's packed tourist resorts, officials have confirmed.

A further 3,600 were injured when tidal waves and flooding savaged the country's popular coastal provinces, dragging hundreds of people out to sea from the picturesque white sand beaches.

Thousands were on Phuket island as terrifying 33ft high waves crashed onto the shoreline and roadways, smashing through holiday bungalows and into towns.

Government officials said the latest death toll stood at 289, but confirmed that thousands more people remained unaccounted for.

The Thai Foreign Ministry said the dead, injured and missing included Britons and nationals from South Korea, Japan, Germany, South Africa, Hong Kong, Denmark, Australia, Malaysia, Mexico, Russia, Sweden and the United States.

Foreign Office staff in Britain could not confirm if any UK nationals have been killed, but at least 10 are thought to be receiving treatment in hospital.

Photographer Simon Clark, 29, of London, saw the disaster unfold in Koh Ngai island, near Krabi. He said: "Suddenly this huge wave came, rushing down the beach, destroying everything in its wake."

His girlfriend, Caroline Barton, 25, also of London, said: "People that were snorkelling were dragged along the coral and washed up on the beach, and people that were sunbathing got washed into the sea."

The huge waves and flooding struck Trang, Songkhla, Phuket, Krabi, Ranong, Phang Nga, Satun and Surat Thani provinces, which draw thousands of visitors to their world-famous beaches.

Thailand is the region's most popular destination and is currently at the peak of the tourist season.

My thoughts go out to everybody who has lost loved ones in this terrible tragedy.
