First of all I think I understand your prickliness here and I know you didn't intend to come across as in a harsh way. I hope you take my reply in the same tone. I just fell in love with what I saw and want to know more.
So it turns out I am pretty well traveled around several parts of the globe but only to Thailand once. Also I didn't just camp on Patong or Bangala. Sure I had a great time there but I saw a little more than that. I also did a lot of sightseeing and diving. This of course doesn't make me an expert on the LoS. I was in Thailand just a little over two weeks on vacation. The only cultural ambassadors waiting for me when I got there were the Thais in the airport and the brothers on the forum.
Oh yeah and I had Loknar with me freaking out since it was really his first time outside of the US (sorry dude). He was in such a state at first but once he relaxed things were great. Ask him about the taxi ride to Patong sometime. 
So...Just to set the record straight I did not ever stagger around like a drunken boob, nor did I ever treat the ladies with anything but respect and admiration. I did drink a little too much one night when I was listening to music but I just got a little chatty, and went home (I am an extraordinarily boring person at times). I also feel entitled to have a few drinks on my vacation and the place is full of pubs. 
If they didn't want to have pubs every three feet in Thailand I am confident that the Thais would dispense with them in short order.
I did meet several of the Thai girls on Bangala that were as drunk as hoot owls and one that had been drinking tequila for a while before I met her. She managed to sell the Buick several times in my bathroom after we got home. That was attractive...she was nice though and sweet, good thing I had an extra toothbrush!
I really didn't see a lot of farangs like me doing anything more than having a normal holiday. By that I mean they were enjoying themselves but I can say without any reservation that the pub scene around Phuket was way way more gentlemanly than it is in any western country especially given the density of watering holes and beautiful distractions. I am not saying mind you that I consider the pub scene a proud western tradition.
Also please remember that this is a v-a-c-a-t-i-o-n destination not a monastery. How else are people supposed to learn about the place 1st hand? There is no way I would care even a quarter as much about the Thais as I do now, if I hadn't spent the time on Phuket or met so many people I loved there. If I had booked some worthless tour with a 5 star hotel and a sanitized setting I would have been wasting my time. I would never have known the "real" Thailand at all not even the speck I saw. I mean I can fly to Cancun for way less from where I am in California, the beaches are way way better in the Caribbean and the water is far clearer. The coastline is not as spectacular given Thailand’s magnificent karst formations. The beaches themselves in Thailand were great but I went for more. I chose the Phuket as my starting point in Thailand. Thailand is a rich and magical land. It has a wonderful history and many exciting cultural aspects. I love to swim and dive so for me it seemed like a great place to begin.
I remain happy with my choice and I plan to return in the summer to see more of the country. I think that this is exactly what the Thais want. If Thailand didn’t have farangs like me coming back time and again or like you moving there, where would they be? Sure there are jerks along the way, but you see that everywhere. Every country I have been to there have I have seen jerks and drunkards. As long as airfare is cheap drunken louts will continue to travel freely. As a matter of fact I read in the Lonely Planet that Thailand has a huge problem with native drinking and driving. On Phuket for example there was well over 10,000 traffic deaths in 2003 and I believe the vast % were Thais.
Given all that I plan to keep going to Thailand and I would enjoy living there someday. I am very appreciative to everyone on this forum for all their help and support. Everything I was told turned out to be true and very useful to me and I will do my best to return the favor.
Like you I am terribly embarrassed when someone acts like a complete boob, mistreats the Thais or acts like a lout. However as with any vacation destination that can happen. It is how everyone reacts to that that makes the difference and I think that most of us wouldn’t want that to happen. I think we would also do whatever we could to diffuse the situation or help out. I only had one bad experience and that was when some complete bitch German woman acted like a complete c_nt in a Thais massage spa. This was a real spa (sorry no happy endings there) and the woman was ordering the Thais around and even actually started snapping her fingers in my face while I was getting a foot rub. Well I felt compelled at that point to ask her to cut it out which she did, but that was the worst I saw the whole time.
I was also thankful the US Navy wasn’t there when I was on Phuket. Interestingly though the BGs acted like they LOVED the US Navy and spoke about those boys in a happy dreamy way, made me think that despite the immaturity exhibited by the sailors (drunken whoremongering) they got well paid and really enjoyed the business. Made me feel almost inadequate as an ex-US Army guy…

Hey whisper,
I can relate. Although I like the BG scene I try to treat the girls like real people. I am an american and I see many ugly americans and germans, english etc in Thai and it always irritates me. My last trip there were 2 american women in front of me yelling at a thai airline woman. They were a perfect example why I wouldn't even consider dating 99.9% of american women. I finally couldn't stand it and told them if the would just quite down ans listen the Thai woman would explain everything and take care of the problem. The woman then made some comment about how the ignorant thai woman couldn't speak english.
I wanted to tell her in no uncertain terms that the Thai woman was most likely college educated, spoke 3 or 4 languages, and that Japanese was probably her 2nd language not english. Instead I tried to practice a little of the Thai face and just said they will take care of us trust her. In fact even though United canceled our flight Thai airways got us back to SFO 2 hours ahead of schedule.
This despite the almost endless line of passengers, most american, berating the airline personel for something that was beyond their controll.
Even the most ignorant BG usually has better maners than about 90% of american woman.
I miss thailand more each trip.

American women think they are owed the world. I increasingly don't get it. The sad thing is that they don't understand how unattractive it is. The other thing they don't seem to get is that they aren't they only game in town. 
I truly love the Thai girls because of who they are. They are a rare treasure. In addition to their exceptional physical beauty the Thais have a spritual beauty that is transcendant.

Better go to Phuket soon again, give it a few years and the island will be 'empty' if this rate was reality. Actual deaths in traffic on Phuket are closer to 100 than 10.000.......
