Know the 'Andaman Hill' hotel. Lived not far from there and a few friends actually stayed here a few times per year. Rooms are OK, nice little pool with a sauna in the front yard. Breakfast seems to be good, according to others. Most comments say that it is great value for money. It is located 5 minutes by car/bike from Bangla and the beach.

Hugh, I checked out the Leelavadee while I was there couple amonths ago.
Nice place, very quiet and intimate, basically consists of a couple of 2-storey blocks built around a free-form pool, with lush landscaping.
I preferred the wing that was attached to the hotel reception counter. The other block is a short walk away and feels slightly cut off, if you like that sort of thing.
The decor is definitely leaning towards quaint and old style. The rooms were a bit musty when I popped my head in, probably because it had been raining at the time. The bogs are clean but use crude stone finishes.
They do charge a joiner of, I think 300baht, if you bring in a chick who didn't register with you upon check-in, but since you said you're travelling with your own dedicated TG, you should be clear unless you decide to have an orgy.
If you're driving down Patong Beach Road, you will pass the mall called Ocean Plaza. Make a left turn at the first road after the mall and proceed about 100 metres down the road. It is on your left.
I personally found it a tad far from the main road but apart from that it looked like a cool place.
Another great alternative within walking distance from Leelavadee is the Baan Boa Resort www.baanboaresort.com but I think it might be booked out. It is bang on Patong Beach and yet secluded. The rooms on the ground level (106,107, 108, 109) are best and 2 feet from the pool. I paid 1,000b a night but that was in low season.
If in Karon, check out www.phuketsawasdee.com. Great boutique hotel, a bit on the pricy side, but excellent romance factor.

Thanks for the info on Leelawadee, Finix. Quiet and intimate will be just great! I'll only have met this girl the evening before, after corresponding with her for 6 months on the net, so it sounds just perfect. I'll probably hire a car for the week, and also for the previous week that I'm staying on Phuket with the other one. Does nobody know of the Holiday Village and Natural Garden Resort at Karon where I'll be spending that first week?
Quite a lot of the other hotels were either fully booked for the first two weeks of January and probably from Xmas, or else they wanted a much higher nightly rate, or insisted on charging an astronomical amount for a compulsory 'Gala Dinner' on New Year's Eve.

Last time I was in phuket I stayed at Fiddy's on Soi sansabai, great guy and same with his family.
No joiner fee and being a newb, he was helpful with a heap of info too.
From memory, 1000bht a night, for me, that was great for the location, the info, and no joiner fee.

Booked a few nights in Feb by mailing C&N Hotel directly.
All I got was a mail sent from a hotmail-adress that "sure you are booked. let us know when you arrive for your free pickup".
I have booked hotels in bangkok, koh chang, pattaya, koh samui and krabi now for my spring tour and everywhere there was "pay now"-rule.
C&N didn't even need any CC-info.
Can I really trust that the room is really there when I arrive? I sure hope so!

I have done the same at CNN but always call to make sure they have the reservation and are prepared for pickup at airport...I have never had a problem but there is always a first time...so call and make sure

Guy’s thank you for all the info, just came back from two weeks had a great time. I went with my Am. Girlfriend we stayed at the Patong Villa. The place was great! They have a pool, girl friendly, clean and breakfast comes with it. I read that the breakfast was not to good so I did not eat there the Savoey restaurant a block away had a great one. They check I.D.’s had no problem bringing girls back, right across the road from the beach. It was close to all the action, the air seems to be a bit on the warm side but other than that it was fine! 1200 Baht a night a little more for the bungalow (recommended) http://www.awd.ws/phuket/patongvilla/

This is the second time I have read that Patong Villa is guest friendly. For the record that is NOT my experience. I was at Patong Villa in early October 2004. The little bitch at check-in told me that "you bring lady back to your room hotel charge you extra 500 baht ".
I was there for four nights and never tested it - maybe they were just pissed cause I was getting the room for only 700 baht a night via http://www.latestays.com
Hotel was okay for 700 but doubt I'd stay there again. Nothing special and only access is via a covered alley full of street vendors at the doorstep.
