Dear future Phuket travelers Just some advice for people going to Phuket during the monsoon season - May through October ( boat trips can be quite painful). ÝWent on a boat trip last time out during the month of July and it was one of the worst experiences of my life (my ass still hasn't heeled). ÝHere's my little story: Ý(other background info that contributes to my torture - was out till sunrise the night before, drank way too much, and even dry heaved over the toilet 15 minutes prior to departure ( --> toilet) - why... because I'm the inexhaustible indulger and of course a bit of a dumbass ). 8am - Picked up from hotel in overcrowded van (I sat on the gear shift for 45 minutes - lucky for me). ÝThen unloaded and got on some sort of speed boat (not sure what model - accommodated about 15 people). ÝSat on the bow - which was the worst possibly place to sit. Ý Headed out towards the big blue ocean and was rather excited to see this famous Phi Phi Islands (where they filmed Leonardo Dicrapio's shitty movie "The Beach" - although I do like the first 5 minutes of that movie - the scenes in BKK). ÝWithin the first couple of minutes we hit our first wave - baaammmm!!! ÝLiterally knocked the wind out of me and stung the hell out of my ass. ÝMy buddy who joined me knew I had a slight fear of sea-sickness after going through a 4 hour storm (nightmare) in the Puget Sound in Washington State several years prior. ÝMy friend immediately saw the fear in my eyes as the tour guide said aloud "aahhhÖ dat little wave, just wait till we get farther out". ÝThe guide told us that it would take about 2 hours to reach our first destination. ÝI tried to maintain my composure in front of the other passengers - being the only American on-board I felt I had to represent and not be a pussy. Surprisingly I made it through the endless poundage of waves - every wave hurt more than the other - in fact I think the driver got a kick out of slamming us. ÝWe reached our first island - ÝKoh Phi Phi. The water was too rough to allow the boat to enter the inlet where the Ý"The Beach" was filmed - so unfortunately that part was scratched. ÝSo we drove around the island where they found a place to go snorkeling - absolutely no fish to be seen. ÝThen we got back in the boat and headed towards Phi Phi Leh for a pre-arranged lunch. ÝIt was probably some of the worst food I have ever eaten in my life, no offense but it was horrible . ÝI even got hassled by some Italian loud mouth asking me if the spaghetti was good - ÝI know he was f_cking with me, trying to joke me in front of his family thinking an American wouldn't know if spaghetti was good or not. Ý I still remember his wife laughing and saying something to him in Italian when he said this to me . ÝHe addressed me as "Americano". ÝI wanted to answer back "Yes Italiano". But I figured he was just one of those types of people (loud and abnoxious) so I let it go. Ý No offense to Italians (I'm part Italian). .. Ý The bathrooms looked like war zones. ÝThe island was boring - with countless tourist stands of useless crap. ÝAfter a couple hours there we headed back on another 2-3 hour ass pounding journey. ÝEveryone on the boat was green in the face and looked awful. Ý To my disappointment we had another stop on the way back on some little island (can't remember name - I think Phi Phi Ton or something) for another 2 or 3 hour excursion. Ý Here we were given time to swim and suntan - again hardly any fish, no color, washed out dead coral. ÝEveryone is getting fried in the sun - some people looked like they have never been in sunlight before, especially some of the northern Europeans (literally glowing white). ÝFinally, we get back on board and made another 1-hour grueling journey back to home port. Ý By this time we were exhausted and drained and couldn't wait to get back to the hotel. ÝWe were last to be dropped off of course - its now 6pm. ÝMy friend is torched and I'm looking like a zombie with bruises on my arms from holding on to the boat's arm rails. ÝHowever, still managed to go out that night and f_ck and drink till dawn I'm sure this trip can be fun given the right time of year but definitely not during the monsoon season - unless you have a stomach made of iron and an ass 4 feet thick. ÝFor me I'll just stick to the nightlifeÖ Cheers

this post brought back some memories..Phuket to Phi Phi in late May, early June... yep.. the return journey was hair-raising. ÝLuckily I am quite immune to sea-sickness... but that couldn't be said for my fellow passengers. ÝOne bonus.. I had the top deck all to myself
