Page 53 of the Economist this week... "half of the hotels in Phuket have been destroyed" is a quote from an article about the impact on tourism in Thailand. Although I have not visited the damaged area personally, from what I have read, this is completely wrong. Surely the Thai gov should be doing something about the misleading reporting coming out in the international press?? MSB

Yes, MSB. You 're quite correct. Half of the Hotels in Phuket have NOT been destroyed. Not even half the hotels in Patong have been destroyed. Maybe half the hotels on Beach Road would be more accurate. I have watched the international news with some interest on the TV. Earlier, they reported on Phuket whilst showing pictures of Sri Lanka and elsewhere. CNN was particularly guilty of this. I recall watching an episode of "Drop the Dead Donkey" some years back. For those that don't know, it is a satire on a British Television station. Their reporter was a bit of a "wide boy". One episode, he was sent to some trouble spot to report on a vicious Civil War there. When he got to the place that was supposed to be right in the thick of things, peace reined supreme. He informed the Editor by satellite phone and was advised that a lot of expense had been involved in getting him out there for no story. Couldn't he find some action to justify his trip? Thinking on his feet, he approached his military bodyguards and slipping one of them some banknotes, bought a hand grenade. Pulling the pin, he nonchalently lobbed it over the nearest wall. Once it had exploded, there was a huge bang, clouds of smoke and fumes. Pandemonium and mass panic ensued. Camera....lights.....action......and they got their story. If they were instead to start filming the way that things are swiftly returning to normality here, it would not be newsworthy. So let's put out stories about bodies being washed up on the beaches, the risk of disease, the stench of death. That's much more sensationalist. Take everything you read or hear in the media with a giant pinch of salt. I for one am having a great holiday here.

Then they can start a whole new ministry for that alone. Something like the Ministry of Information. I think Mr. Al Sahaf is still on the market for a job. In Sweden the press is running away with the story how all missing swedish children are kidnapped by the thai sexmaffia. The realy bad thing about it, is that the parents rather believe this shit, then cope with the fact their kids have been washed to sea and are certainly dead. Seems like vultures don't always come in feathers.

A snip from a hotel site: "SUNSET BEACH RESORT located on the quiet place on north Patong. We are operating normally, except business centre, tour counters, conference room. The flooding destroyed the lobby, reception, business centre, conference room and tour counters. There is no staff and guest is injured. We are cleaning swimming pool. We will open the swimming pool on 3rd January 2005." Got to admire the drive to stay in business. They have no staff, but "operating normally".

I think this is the Thaienglish way of saying "no staff or guest was injured". Nonetheless, this hotel doesn't look like a great place to stay for a holiday right now.

... which is a good reason to go and stay there, I believe. The tourist scene will never recover if people choose not to stay in hotels that were damaged. It won't kill the tourists to "rough it" just once in order to help, surely?

Personally it's way to soon to go to Phuket and party like I'm on vacation. I think 6 month's would allow people to grieve. What are the chances of another big earthquake and tidal wave hitting this area again? I don't know but it would be on my mind constantly. These are not the type of thoughts I want to have on vacation. I've had my wife and daughter on vacation with me in Phuket. I honestly don't know if I would be willing to take the risk.

BIGDusa, I totally understand your reaction to what has happened in Phuket BUT I think you are totally wrong. The facts are these - less than 300 people were killed in Phuket, half of them tourists. Around 80% of the the hotels rooms are fully operational. First consider the locals. There will be a few who have been very badly affected by loss of life and many more who have experienced a second hand loss. I still think that 99% of people want things to return to normal or want to repair their damaged lives. What they need for that is for tourists to return to Phuket. Next consider your holiday - and the holiday of your wife and kid. The reality is that you will face little more than a few minor inconviencies - blocked roads from building, the sound fo rebuilding etc.. This should be offset by cheaper room rates than would normally prevail, and cleaner and less crowded beaches than usual as well as enormous appreciation from the local residents. Obviously it is your decision whether you decide to go. I am not suggesting that you go out of an act of charity. I honestly believe the benefits - cheaper accomodation etc will easily outweigh some minor inconviencies. At the same time you will also be helping to rebuild the economy. I am in touch with people everyday from Phuket - I have a house there - I am passing on their sentiments. The residents are obviously bias, maybe I am too BUT I honestly believe that if you go there for a holiday it will be a good decision.

BIGDUSA, I've heard scientists talking on TV saying something like this happens every 100-200 years.
