Not new to LOS but new to Phuket (May 2005) done loads of research got hotels, nightlife etc sorted. Just one question remains (yes I tried a search) How much should a taxi from the airport to Patong cost? Is there a regulated booth like Don Muang or a free for all ala Samui?

Hi MD,
i think that there is a free for all, however I have always used the taxi booth by the exit, that gives you a choice of paying something like 250 bht (per person) for the mini-bus, but you need to wait for the mini-bus to fill up - 8 people if I remember right.
As I am usually impatient to get to the action, I have always decided on getting a taxi\mini bus straight away, so for the four of us it cost 1100 bht, so a bit more expensive, but worth it rather than waiting around!
The return journey cost 800 bht...!
The journey takes around 45 minutes

Last year it was from 500 to 600 baht for a ride to Patong.

Thanks for the info guy’s, sounds like booking the hotel car pick up service at 550 baht is not to bad a deal. Who needs all the stress for the sake of a couple of 100 baht?

You could try hiring a car - if you are going to make use of it whilst on the Island, it will save you money on taxis and transfers etc. I have hired a 2.7 Turbo PickUp for 1300BHAT per day, which between us will cost us much less than taxis etc. Only problem is we will look like complete and utter dicks in the truck

Don't think so on the truck! Won't get the value out of it. But am taking my own lid so can hire a MB for a couple of days sight seeing. (Yes I have drove in LOS before) Hence my own skid lid.

In Jan this year I got a cab into Patong 550 bht from the Airport.
Return booking through my hotel 550 bht.
Feb this year got a free pick up from my hotel
Return booking the same 550 bht.

UPDATED NOVEMBER 2006:
From arrivals, walk outside, ignore all the taxi counters and touts. As soom as you get outside, turn right and you will see a big "taxi meter" sign. (Note: This is the current location as of Nov 2006, it used to be elsewhere)
Fare to Patong was about 410 baht (meter plus 100 baht airport surcharge), no hassles, nice car. There is no extra charge for extra people.
This is just like in the BKK airport, you don't have to pay more for a taxi from a tout or the counter when the taxi meter is about 400 baht? Many people do not know this taxi meter stand is there, the driver told me that they are not allowed to solicit inside the airport.

Got to agree with that. I have been to Phuket so many times that I have lost count. Never knew about the Meter Taxi rank. I'll try them next time.
The C&N Hotel used to provide a free airport pick-up if you provided flight details and requested it when you booked. Not sure it that still goes.
Taxi fares are one of the worst rip-offs that Phuket has to offer. 200 baht for a trip that in Bangkok would be 60 baht maximum.
Share taxi (mini-bus) was 150 baht last time I used it (October 2004) from the booth at arrivals. They stop after about 20 minutes at their office to "change" taxis but its just an excuse to try and sell you tours or accommodation. The trip takes about 30 to 40 minutes plus the 20 mins plus delay at the office. The 550 baht direct trip in a car looked attractive by that stage. Enjoy.
