Note that a quake measuring 8.5 has just occurred off western sumatra. People in western Thai coastal areas are being advised to evacuate due to the possibility of a tsunami.

Looks like the people can rest easy - they have given the all clear and said that the threat has passed.....
Kinda scary they are saying that there could be a few more as the earth settles down -
Could have a knock on effect on tourisim.
Hope that everyone is okay in Phuket. Its a brilliant place and I made so many friends there when I was there - cant wait to go back tusamni or not..........

I am away at work right now in the UK, (bleeding freezing it is too) and called the missus, we live in Rawai, and she said the house shook and there were trucks driving round with speakers telling everyone to get to high ground.
Once again the mobile phones were out, had a hell of a job contacting her, maybe the music was too loud in the Karaoke?
Anyway the comunication companies should have some back up lines to compenstate for disasters! but of course they don't.
Glad it wasn't the big one again, but I am sure we wil have a few more cracks in the concrete on the house.

I was with my companion for the night when she gets a phone call on her cell. Turns the TV on and starts flipping thru the channels. I am thinking WTF, when she gets to a FOX report of a new earthquake. Great...just what I need. She is in a panic, worried about another Tsunami, girl who lives next door starts pounding at the door saying "Tsunami, tsunami!". I am feeling safe since I am staying at the end of Bangla road away from the beach and the map I saw of the location of the quake didn't look like would produce anything, but I ain't a seismologist. Anyways, the girl is almost crying at this point. Soooo...off we hope onto the motorbike and head for the hills ma. Roads are packed, everyone just trying to get inland and higher. Almost reminded me of some pics of the evacuation of Saigon. Not as much panic as I would have thought, but you could see the fear. After camping on the hill for about 30 minutes, get the all clear and head back down. All in all an interesting night. No tsunami thank goodness, and even made my 0730 tee time the next day. That night I talked to a few of the bar owners in the Tiger complex, said is was almost an instant evac. Lights came on, music stopped, and everyone left. That night though, everything was back to normal, and even the girls were joking about it. Looks like there might be several more quakes in the region, but not as bad as the Dec 26 one, and no more tsunami's, I hope.

Yeppers, perfect time for the Indonesian gov't to send the UN aid folks packing. 3 days later, next big quake!
Guess who's been pleading for help right next day..? Right!
Just glad it wasn't a massive event, even though several thousands won't be comforted from that, unfortunately.
