Seems that every now and then the mainstream press likes to report on the Tsunami aftermath. CNN just recently had an article how reconstruction after the Tsunami will take 10 years, or so.

Saw a link to this article on an Australian site recently:

http://www.smh.com.au

It's filled with lots of doom and gloom about low occupancy rates in Phuket, reduced flights, and how 'Phuket' is a ghost town?

Anyone actually there to give some impressions what it's like right about now, just to verify how much journalistic accuracy is in that article?

Not there sorry, but saw reports in european papers this week stating similar.

Also I noted in Indonesia they have brought the sharia
laws in, some kind of bullshit written a long time ago.

So basically these clever buggers are taking their country back to medieval times ( a round of applause)

Which means public floggings have already started, hand removals and possible heads to follow.

gambling, alcohol and screwing away from home
are the crimes ???? to be punished.

What a load of bollucks

Sharia = Islamic Law.

No surprise for Indonesia - same guys that kicked the United Nations aid guys out, and when the second big quake happened three days after that, were wining about needing the UN help...

Anyway, if they prefer being back in medieval times, that works just fine, as that's where the West is headed itself.

Anyway, back to Phuket...

Couldn't read the article as I didn't want to register with smh. But,

I was there 2 weeks ago and I wouldn't say the place is a ghost town. From talking to people, numbers are down but one guy I was talking to who is associated with a hotel was optimistic that things will return eventually. The worse he said was immediately after it happened with everyone leaving and the bodies left around. There are some places which are popular and not so popular. One example was Tiger Disco was always full where you had to push past people to move. Elsewhere you would see some beerbars had 4-5 farangs drinking and the bar next to it was empty....All the barsin the beerbar complex under tiger were doing alright when I was there.

I noticed the local's play the Tsunami a bit when haggling saying that they had already discounted the amount and that pre-tsunami they would of asked for xxxx baht. Didn't really believed them as I had an idea of prices elsewhere in Thailand.

Trying to get a motorbike other then a moped was more of a challenge. One place had the bike I wanted (xt600 or similar), but weren't registered as they were still sorting out insurance as they were repaired after the Tsunami.

The funny thing is that while the hotels/airlines etc are discounting to draw people to visit - the tuk tuk mafia is in force and not negotiating on the starting price of 100 baht. Don't see how they can maintain it when the motorbike taxi's will do it for 20 baht.

Not sure about the construction claim of 10 years as they seemed to be getting on with it pretty well.

I would say if you haven't been to Phuket, now would be a time to see it without the crowds. Those crowds will eventually be back, its just a matter of time but I suspect it will be a lot sooner then 10 years.

Cheers

Exactly!

I live in Phuket and all the main areas are back up and running now.

Get your pockets full of cash and come to Phuket and spend your money where it will help most..... actually in Phuket.
I personally am enjoying the lack of tourists as places like Patong get over crowded by my standards, but it is certainly all up and running.

I don't undestand a media that prints/broadcasts doom and gloom as apposed to the real truth, but I guess doom sells and progress doesn't

More Phuket paranoia, this time from CNN:

http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/asiapcf/06/26/haunted.beaches.ap/index.html

Yeah, I agree - you'd think the news media would act more responsible about reporting about the rebuilding and indomitable spirit of the locals - including how unlikely another Tsunami would be... but I guess bad news sells better...

I will be back in Phuket come christmas, hope to snare a bargain on accomodation.
Are the bar girls back, I heard there was more trouble getting the Thai people back than tourists ( the old Thai "ghost" worries).

I'll be going back in August, C&N are asking 600THB/night for a double which is under half what they gouged me for immediately after the tsunami (my hotel on the beach front having been wrecked).

Keeping an eye on phuket-info.com/forum/, mongers don't seem to be that discouraged and there are plenty of girls about, things should pick up especially by Xmas, but I'm looking forward to an 'active' week even in August.

cheers,

K.

Ho ho Mr Duck, would you care to elaborate, The West is what exately. Im aware that the moslims have a plan to bring western europe back 6 centurys if they get the chance. But do you include USA in this and what is your hypothesis based upon.

Ok back to phuket.

Not having read the article in the Sydney Morning Herald, I can postulate that they are probably referring to the Khao Lak area when they are talking about hotels being rebuilt in 10 years.
The hotels in Phuket are almost all back to normal, even the ones worst hit.
Also, the journalist (if they were even here in Phuket) probably did not even realise that this is, in fact, low season, which explains why the place is a "ghost town" compared to more profitable times.
Simply another case of lazy journalism, which is abundant in Australia's newspapers these days.
