last visit to phuket was 1995 though I travel to los regularly I never made it down to this part of the country in the last 10 years.
patong beach was the centre of the nightlife. karon beach was very quiet and not much happening there. and the other beaches werent worth a mention. so is it still pretty much the same?
Im planning a trip there next week and looking for recommendations for my stay. I am not too concerned about being that close to the nightlife action. The only criteria is a decent hotel (around 2500) close to the beach which has internet access in the rooms.

Hi Gec,
I lived in Phuket and prefered Kata beach Kata and kata noi) to all the others.
My house was in Nai Harn, a much quiter beach but still cool. They also have a bar there called Laguna that is open until sun up and many BG's go there when their bars shut down.
I would recommend hanging out on Kata Noi at least 1 day.

first, I love the new NO FLAME policy. props.
second, good topic. I haven't been to phuket in a couple years myself, despite living in the region for about 6 years. I too had thought patong beach was the place to stay. now i'm searching kata as an option. my tastes: clean beach; clean ocean water; modern mid-scale hotel; near enough (say 15 min tuk tuk) to all the clubs, bars, whore bars, etc.
ideas?

My TGF and I stayed at Karon Beach last November for two weeks. Had stayed at Patong before, but wanted something quieter. I liked Karon, as it's a quick hop over the headland to Patong, but a nice quiet spot when the sun goes down. Still a lot of rebuilding going on there on the oceanfront, but I enjoyed it. Also easy access to the beaches/SCUBA south of there. Had the usual small handful of beer bars, but the pickin' for that is infinitely bigger in Patong.
