It is my last day in Phuket and very likely I wont be back, I came here to meet the oldest Buddhist Master in Thailand (115 years old!) and tried to enjoy whatever else there was to enjoy once the interview done....well, Phuket has not impressed me, everything here is VERY overpriced even compared to Kho Samui in Hight season
I stayed at the orchid residence in Soi San Sabai, clean and quiet place with a friendly staff (girl friendly to), but really their price of 1500 baht for the room because of "hight season" is a joke....but low season price is 650 baht and at this rate it will indeed be a good deal
About Patong, if you dont know it, just imagine pattaya with less good looking girls, more old couples and lots of farangs of all ages....
Soi Bangla is almost a carbon copy of walking street in pattaya.....with EVERYTHING double the price...
Some examples;
ladydrink in a beer bar...180 baht
a medium size ice cream...300 baht
a beer in a gogo bar.... 130 baht minimum
barfine....i dont know but wont be surprised if its 1000 baht and up judging from the other prices
Transportation are a pure thai style scam here, you have choice between overpriced taxi, overpriced tuk tuk, overpriced motorsai or rent a motorbike BUT NO INSURANCE so any problem is entirely at your own risk and also police is out ever 1 or 2km to "check" the farangs....
Weirdly only the girls are pretty cheap...1500 LT seem to be the norm, but to get freelancers you have to wait until midnight and go to the disco (Tiger and Holliwood have free entrance, free drinks and even free food each night to attract more gals! Banana disco charge the girls 100 baht and of course has much less working girls...)
Of course you can try to go to the beach if you want to try to catch some girls, or try your luck in a massage place but really what a hassle compared to pattaya, and getting a quick BJ behind a curtain will cost you the same price (or more) as a 1 hours ST in pattaya
During this stay I mostly stayed with the same girl I met on second day...very slim and good looking, up for anything and really fun to be with, she stayed with me most of the time and I will really miss her once back in Bangkok.....and she is 37, but incredible how good looking she is for this age!
First night I took a weird girl from Cambodia who was looking like Amelie Poulain (yes even the voice...just imagine Amelie Poulain saying "you boom boom now?"  ),with a long white flower dress, slim, skin whiter than mine but just so shy....
If you HAVE TO go to Phuket you can have a good time, but be ready to spend much more than going any other place in Thailand and to see so many farang you will think you are back home...

I was in Phuket/Patong a few years back, and swore never to return. Your post Madfrog just confirms what I thought then.
All my TG experiences were bad to mediocre. The whole thing seemed more directed at tourists who wanted to have their picture taken with LBs than true mongers. And the number of gawking tourists compared to PTY was overwhelming. Especially asian tour groups. And I would hear only Swedish and German in the discos. It truly was like a plastic, imitation version of PTY.
And there was clearly an attitude problem among the BGs. I have never experience before or since such a feeling of cynical hustling going on. BGs who would ask you for a LD and then ignore you once it arrived. Most of the girls wanting ST only, and no GFE to be found as far as I could manage. I thought to myself at the time, perhaps I am just having a run of bad luck. But after a week there, I changed my mind. Phuket sucks for p4p.
I did like the hammer the nails into the log though, they should import that one to PTY. And the beach was nice. So, I might go back to Phuket, but not to Patong, and not to pay to play.

Essentially, what you are saying is that if one wanted to head to Phuket, to pack your own lunch, so to speak?
I heard the exact same thing - except that for a friend of mine who did (pack his own lunch) then he found the tourist trap attitude of the whole place, the high prices, and relatively venal attitude of most there to be quickly tiring - he came back, same swearing off a return trip to Phuket.
Subsequently, I have not been, and do not plan on going.

Madfrog, you may be right in some aspects, but I don't agree with the bit about the traffic police. I have a condo on the island and am a frequent visitor. I constantly drove both jeep and bike, often worse for wear from drinks. I have never once been stopped by the police in over 10 years, or indeed even see police stopping farang. There is a stop station just outside Patong on way to Karon, but very rarely are the police there.
The rest of you - there is no danger of you getting employment at the Phuket tourist board is there ?! Come on guys - Phuket is what it is, and doesn't claim to be a mongering centre of excellence. Both the beaches and restaurants are better than Pattaya and whilst Patong might be full of crazy Woolfgang Mozart lookealikes, it is still a pleasant change from the harcore Pattaya in your face experience. If you only want P4P and nothing else - don't go to Phuket. But if you hook up with a cuty and want an escape, Phuket can be one of the best places on earth if you know where to go, stay and eat etc.
And whilst it certainly isn't built up on a large scale, you can still get a nice LT at the bars scattered around Kata and Karon - agree not everyone's scene, but a change of experience doesn't do any harm once in a while.

Yep I swore the last time that I went to Phuket in 2004 before the tsunami that I would never go back.
European prices in thailand, tourist trap for mom and pop tourists.
One poster reckons that Phuket has better restaurants.....Pattaya has everything and more....no reason to go anywhere else really...and it is reasonably priced.
No desire to return to Phuket anytime soon.

No problem with you chaps feeling the way you do; but us Phuket oldtimers are failry content with life on our beautiful island. We have our own quite reasonable places to sail, swim, golf, fish, drink, or boom boom...and just avoid the taxi mafia and over tourist oriented girlie bars.
By the way, the cops have never stopped me for a tip in the 20 plus years I have been driving down here; although we may occasionally stop to report something amiss.. They are mostly a good bunch.
Now Pattaya...that's a place I knew well 30 to 40 years ago...but when I visit these days to see old friends I'm scared out of my mind with all the farang riff-raff and Thai hangers-on. Sure the bars are cheaper, there are go-gos galore, and lady boys abound, but that scene is not my cup of tea.

yes phuket is an island, very beautiful, with one area of p4p, whereas pattaya really is a whole town of it
i think most people who go to phuket go for the beaches and "higher class" resorts there rather than the p4p
its a bit like saying patpong in bangkok is the whole of the city
each to their own, I like phuket as an island but didnt really like pattaya, just seemed to be that bit sleazier and "cheaper" and dirtier than patong or even bangers
