My new smartphone has wifi connectiviity so even though I can't dial home with it (CDMA) I could at least check emails etc. with a wifi connection. So I was wondering what is the availability of free/unsecure wifi while roaming around Patong? Or should I just settle for an internet cafe? THANKS....Arriving in 3 days !!!!!

Usual places for Free WiFi are the Starbucks Cafes & MacDonald's. Lots in Patong. Also many of the Thai Bars have free Wifi. Not hard to find!

That is why you should use Nokia, it will ask before connecting to a roaming service. As for WiFi my experience has been spotty. Starbucks requires you to log in with a card to use their WiFi. I have had some luck in lobbies of hotels where there is public WiFi (such as Landmark and JW). Other areas I get routed to the local provider's page that asks me to enter a pre-paid card number. Now let's make a distinction here, I am talking about using the WiFi capability of the phone not its EDGE/GPRS (3G) capability. If you are using a non-Thai Sim and are hooking to the internet with a EDGE/GPRS connection you are paying 'big bucks'. On a recent trip I just downloaded some email headers (three times), just a few Kb of data, using GPRS-3G and it cost me SGD 200 in roaming charges. Remember that they will charge not only for data downloaded, but any log-in and session maintenance transactions are billed too. Best bet is to get a netbook and a Mobile Internet Stick from a Thai provider.... much cheaper...

I can second Boingo (be sure to sign up for the Mobile version - there's an app for iPhone and Android) - $8 a month, month to month, can cancel anytime. Gives me 'free' Wifi in all airports (including overpriced Sue-Wanna-Boom), and most places in BKK. Only difference is that it doesn't handle seamless switching between hotspots, as TRUE wifi on contract does - but that's a minor issue for 1/3 the price ==> Painful lesson for Blonk to not read the data roaming charges, or to ignore the text message sent by his carrier alerting him to that 58,000 AU$ - ouch. I'm sure you can contest.
