Thank you for transmitting this very ineresting article from bloomberdg news. No, I don't think that phuket, even if the crisis there, and really not at the end, will make prices down. Remember, in 1997, as thailand was economically collapsing, and as the bath was falling to nearly 35 %, Phuket hotels owners immediately rised their prices of 50% ! Nothing is done there to be a normal cost vacation island : . Tuk tuk and taxis much too expensive, and really bad service. . Closing of the night venues at 2 in the morning, fair for the tourists ? imagine the same thing in miami, biarritz, marbella, … . Restaurants and hotels too expensive. . Roads and beaches not safe and dirty. But the major problem in Phuket is the cost of the land. As told in Bloomberg article, some families are making very good business, by speculating on this non extensive island land. Just for joke, a 2 meters stand on beach road for selling tee shirt or souvenirs, or bangla road is rented 20.000 baths a month ( aveaverage thai salary : 6500 baths ). Now we heard from the governor of the island that the backpackers will not be welcomed anymore , ans that the government want to open a casino in Kamala, and organize star tours with thai guide celebrities, like movie stars, or mister thaksin himself ! Their last idea, is to extend the business of medical treatment, plastic surgery for exemple, for the senior people. I think, after spending 3 years there, that Phuket has to live a huge crisis like Pattaya lived some years ago, and then may be, the land owners will change their mind. Never forget that thai people think only for today, tomorrow is already too far away - smile

Fnguy25, This is an interesting article indeed, it looks like the hotels might be giving special rates during this crisis as the low-season is approaching, aswell.
