Giving this thread some serious thought, I'm wondering if the general distinction between "thai" and "farang" is referring to the "thai male" point of view.
If you are talking to a tbg and the discussion of how she wants to marry a farang pops up, one of the answer's I've noticed always given is that "Thai man no good - not stay with one lady". etc etc
The three main reasons are that thai men:
1. Want to butterfly;
2. Drink all the time;
3. Don't want to work.
So maybe its more a case of acknowledging that thai women have a different outlook to a thai male. "Serious" for her more closely resembles the farang view of "serious" than the thai man interpretation of serious.
BTW - I don't disagree with the maxim of "at this moment in time". That way your "lub of your life" (sic) can still work at the bar ST and LT'ing while waiting for you to organise that fiance visa.
I recall seeing this bar/gogo girl jumping on this new CBR900 in Soi8 Pattaya and normally I'll stop to admire these sort of sport bikes. This time I was looking at her and wondering what sucker is sending her money to pay for the bike, while he's probably thinking he's keeping her out of the bar/gogo until that fiance visa comes through.

I was talking to a Thai guy I know. He speaks excellent English and he was telling me about his min noi (s) second wife and how his wife would accept her. He told me there wouldn't be a problem.
Next time I see him about three month's later, I ask if he noticed any changes in the way his wife deals with him. He thought for a moment and replied ya she seems to be a bit distant and is not as interested in what he does. She still does her wifely duties but it's different.
Thai women will tolerate what her husband does because she's stuck not because she wants to.

There is a new book in the stores called Thailand Fever. Read the website for details. It is written by a farang man and Thai women. It is a technical manual for farang men and TGs, in Thai and English, on how to have a successful relationship (serious). Great focus is placed on the money kraeng jai issue. This is the first book that is addressed to the Thai girl.
I read this book all the way Pattaya and could not put it down. I had to give military history a break. I learned so much about how I failed in my first marriage with a well-to-do TG of noble blood and I am learning alot about my current LTGF Issan ex-short timer BG. I have known for almost two years and we are starting to discuss marriage. The dowry started out at 200,000 for her papa's new home in Buriram. I gave her the book, she read it three times, could not stop talking about, and now the dowry is down to 100,000 w/o me even negotiating.
No worries because my LTGF is honest and ethical almost to her detriment. She is always hard up for money. A farang couple dropped their billfold that had 10,000 baht. They did not even notice and kept walking. LTGF picked it up and chased them down for 10 minutes into Robinson's and returned it.
Actually, this also happened to me in Daidamon. I left my wallet there with 8,000 baht (this was in 96). I came back to the restaurant. The busboy was keeping my wallet safe N sound w all 8000 baht. I did give a big tip.

First marriage for your girl friend? Does she have any children? Even if she doesn't IMHO your being taken for a ride at the 100,000 baht for dowry.

For the most part we are dealing with the lowest rung of Thai society with the BG. Sure there are exceptions but they are rare. We are dealing with what we would call in America, trailer trash the kind of people that go on the Jerry Springer show.

Never never never believe what a bargirl (or any Thai) tells you. Look at what they do.
There are a good many bargirls who do the job because they:
1. Enjoy the sex;
2. Like the free booze;
3. Don't want to work. (many of them will only turn up two or three days a week).
They want to marry farangs because we have more money. Witness how many have Thai boyfriends even after landing a farang. The rest of it is typical Thai bullshit. The women are as unreliable as the men. Thai women serious? Give me a break.

Yes, I've met these ones too because they become addicted to the money, the booze etc etc.
A good test to see whether the girl really doesn't like working the bars (don't 99.9% say this) is to look at their mobile phone. If its an older model - she's saving her money (or is ugly and just not getting bf - lol).

"Serious" in the context of my original discussion that thai women have a problem with "cheating husbands".......as opposed to thai men seeing no problem with ST young thai girl.
I can recall a taxi driver telling me on one long trip as to why it is OK for him to see massage girls. Same one who told me he ripped off some MP girl by giving here foreign money that he said had a higher exchange rate than actually it was. Ended up the girl got something like 100 baht - no wonder these girls get jaded.
