On a purely personal level, I agree with cisco - single mothers are best to be avoided for a variety of reasons, least of which is that any relationship with them is unfair to both them, as well as their child.

Where you're talking on a personal level here, did you mean that it would be unfair on them and their child to have a relationship with you, or are you talking about relationships with guys in general? If the former, then fair enough. You might not be prepared to make a full commitment to bringing up somebody else's child. I'm with you there too and don't feel able to have that responsibility, having already gone through it with my two children who are now grown up.
But there are lots of guys out there who would consider it. What they are getting in return is a girl possibly half their age, who will love them probably all the more because they are providing love and security to them both. I don't see where the unfairness comes into that scenario. That sort of guy is quite possibly a better person for being more sharing and caring, less selfish, etc.
Your approach to the subject of male attitudes seems a good way to go about it. Even so, I wonder whether these young Thai males might think that their Farang teacher is trying to instill Western thinking on their Asian culture and that he ought to butt out of things he doesn't understand. It's worth a try though, as it's possible that even if they don't agree, they might subconsciously have taken some of it on board.

You are both right, I blew an excellent opportunity, but in my defense, I was completely unprepared for the conversation. This was my first real introduction to Thai relationship standards and I was a bit lost. Well, now I know more and am a bit more well prepared. I will not force the issue, but next time it arises, I will be a bit pedantic on their arses. I think that it is an excellent way to continue teaching critical thinking, it really should hit home for them.

Thanks for the compliments, I was always taught to respect all people and to treat them well. Obviously I'm no angel, wouldn't be here now would I? Also, thanks for the info on the dating sites. I don't know if that is something that I would volunteer to my friends, it would seem a bit forward on my part to even assume that they are looking for someone. For all I know, they are content being single. I was just curious as to whether they had options. I will certainly tell them about the dating sites if they ask. They are really quite wonderful women and would (at least for me) make excellent companions/wives/what have you.
If you make it up to Chiang Mai anytime prior to your retirement, let me know. Maybe we can drown a beer or three.
