My soon ex-LTGF got me hooked by a visit to her village outside of Buriram. Boy did I get suckered punched after meeting daddy, young brother, and the whole gang. They all showed and wanted money. I did not even receive a charcoal-cooked meal. I got alot of great sex back in the hotel but little hospitality from her drunk daddy and greedy cousins.
It is all individual. I think my girl meant well but her family put the vice on her (18 mos ago at this visit) and I think this planted the seeds of soon to be termination.
Be careful.

Dear Bro's,
Thanks for the great insights, as QQ's question is also pending for me...my first trip upcountry (to Chiang Rai) to meet the family is slated for this summer. I'm not afraid to look poverty in the eye (I've spent a lot more time in India than Thailand, and I can't believe I'll encounter anything worse than India), but what I am concerned about is unintentionally slighting my BG's family, and making them or her lose face in any way.
For example, I plan to stay in a nice hotel and invite the family out for dinner and entertainment. Do the nicer hotels in Chiang Rai understand and cater to these scenarios, or will my BG's very peasant family be more embarassed than pleased by such an invitation? Will the hotel staff, used to catering to wealthy customers, look down on them?
Also,.will I be inadvertently insulting them if I don't spend a lot of time at their place, or if I don't want to eat or drink something they offer?
Understand that these things are largely case by case, but any insights are appreciated.

They may not be comfy in a posh place, maybe ask your TG to suggest a place/ get her family to suggest. They will be happy enough if you pay for it.

Chiang Rai is a pretty small place with few posh hotels. Not to be confused with Chiang Mai.
An outdoor restaurant, Thai style, near the village would be great.
Talk your concerns over with the GF?
Face in the village is easy with a house party and loads of cheap Thai whisky ($3 a bottle). Plus, make the visit short in the village.1 or 2 days.
Chiang Rai is beautiful (I like it!). Mountains, hot springs, history, long necked people, Golden Triangle, a coupla days in Myanmar, a couple in Laos, boat on the Mekong. Good excuses to go with the GF. I would not be taking the family on these trips unless they are her kids.
