I would be very surprised if Stickman is making it up ?
I know he is not popular in a lot of quarters for telling it like it is but he seems an OK bloke to me.
The problem is he does not always tells it like it is, he tells it through his new rose tinted glasses.
But after reading that story, I do agree this time he did well and got it right.
I hear most computer geeks are the same though.

I can just about use a PC so perhaps I don't qualify for a geek?
Anyway I found the story amazing and I wondered if any of the long-time Thailand visitors have encountered similar.
Fact is definitely stranger than fiction ?

the story's ridiculous, but unfortunately probably true. In fact, you have to realize, even family's of so-called good girls from the countryside will naturally boost up the marriage prices when a foreigner's involved. Their usual logic is, well it's giving her to a foreigner so we ought to get something to show how lucky we are. As you've read in the tour books, Appearance is extremely important to Thais. Whereas in the West it's seen as superficial or worse, here it isn't.
But those amounts mentioned are insane.
A guy would either have to be so rich that he himself is insane [like howard hughes??] or else hit with leprosy or such an intense level of sexual disappointment and frustration in his own country that he's on the verge of suicide to accept such a deal. Or he'd never taken a stroll down Sukumvit road after 10pm...
Well he'd been to Cm2 disco at least. And he escaped this scam. So it's a word to all to investigate the prices in that situation. As I say, even if it's not so outrageous for various reasons of "face" it's usually still a bit inflated. Usually.

I don't pity the guy at all, guys that stupid deserve to get ripped off. But, I find it sad that some slag sent by her low life family to go work in Bangkok has hit it that big. That is such a huge amount of money for normal hard working Thai's, it's sad to see it going to such scummy people. All her low life family is just going to loaf about for the rest of their lives drinking Sangsom, oops Jonny Walker now, because of this loser.

I agree 100% with Opti...he deserves it all the more because he was WARNED by Stickman himself (who he hired to help him in this situation). It's truly disgusting that idiots like this really reward gold-digging trash like this chick and her family while there are soooo many good girls and families out there (even a few, very few, in P4P) who don't buy in to "rip off the farang for all he's got" mentality.
Additionally, stories like this spread like wildfire and the 'working girls' just get greedier and greedier. It continually annoys me that so many guys truly enjoy the fact that they 'can' and that they 'do' overpay and ruin the market. Let this guy go down in flames......it's called 'Darwinism' at it's finest.

I dont intend to justify this woman or her family but there are 2 things you have to bear in mind.
(1) Thai girls (especially BGs) are far more family orientated than westerners. The 'buffalo story' is not so much bullshit as asking whether you are prepared to take care of the needs of her extended family. A westerner happily agrees to marry some BG with the intention of making 'her' life happier while the BG imagines that she is marrying him to make 'her family's' life better. From a Thai perspective, if you are not prepared to help the extended family, wtf is the girl doing getting married to you in the first place. The girl knows (and respects the fact) that she is making a sacrifice for the good of her family - it is important that 'farang' understand this too.
(2) There really are no sensible divorce laws in Thailand. You get married, you break up, possession is 9/10ths of the law. In other words 'the sinsot' is effectively a prepayment for if the marriage ends. By getting the money upfront, the girl doesnt give away the best say 5 years of her life and then end up with nothing.
Bearing this in mind, it doesnt sound that ridiculous. Bt2m (US$50,000) for a well paid guy is a pittance in terms of a divorce settlement. Seems to me there is definitely a crazy logic to it. It is not a scam...more a business transaction.

too much money... although you nailed the 2 points you made about the TG and her commitment to the family, truth be told there are norms in their society, one of the them is the price of their daughters. It is normal for the family to take as much as possible, but on the whole most know what their girls are wort and 2 million baht is not the truth.
Most of the guys I know support the family for around 10,000 baht per month. If you don't do it, she will find a way to do it. Next, maybe 100,000 baht in cash and some gold usually does the trick.
Third and best is to let her know that if she ever screws with you the first thing you will do is go back to the bar where all her friends are and screw EVERY one of her friends. If this doesn't bother her, she doesn't love you anyway. If the thought of this scares the hell out of her, good. She needs to know she is replaceable and if it is her fault you will make her loose face if she screwes up. Sounds harsh maybe, but I find peace in this thought. And I have been married for around 4 years now, never a probelm, she is very trust worthy and loving, never been happier.

Yeah, and a girl that 'goes with customer' certainly isn't worth that much, at all - add to that, the girl has 'women problems' and can't have kids, and her net worth just about bottomed out.
It has nothing to do if the guy is well off -- he's still being an idiot to agree to this. Lastly, I feel that the family wasn't really much involved in the negotiations, but rather the 'family friend' lady, who appears to be in to this for her own cut.
If it were me, I would have pretty much cut this whole negotiation short, by having the negotiating bitch taken aside, told her that I know that the girl is worth nothing because of her flub about the women's problems, and let her know that she'll either take 200,000 Bath (already too much), or I'll have my translator, right now, tell the parents that she squealed about the daughter's problems, and throw in what the daughter does for a living.
Would be interesting to see what the outcome is then.

Related to this, a question for the brothers who have been living in Thailand for a long time:
Is this family (and its system of values) the rule, or the exception?
