Maybe this is because they have learned that at some places, not a single baht of the money left on the plate goes to the staff, it goes to the bar.  By leaving it on the plate, they are tipping the bar owner.
This is all too true, as I have found out over several of my first trips - until one of the girls set me straight, and explained the reason should would prefer to have me pick up the change, and put it in her hand 
This turns out to have been one of the better tips for tips, as I have continued doing this most of the time since then, and subsequently always receive a much bigger smile from the waitresses when I take the money from the plate, to subsequently place in her hand. Good advice from CG, as always.

Agreed. If I am getting service from predominantly one waitress, I usually give her the change directly, so that she benefits. In some of the gogos I frequent, the money that goes into the bar (the stuff you leave on the tray) is divided up amongst the staff at the end of the day. Though I imagine there are some establishments that short the staff ("one for you, one for me, one for you, one for me...").

I had a couple of first-timers (first time with farang that is), they're okay so long as you a) don;'t expect too much b) don't let them get too drunkl and c) have a backup:
1) girl from Stringfellow's gogo, Pattaya. Nice slim figure, no English. An older girl explained she had never been with a farang (but had had a baby) but wanted to go with me. I suggested the (much) older girl come along too to show her the ropes and translate. I was prepared to be patient and understanding. The two took a while in the shower together, making me wait outside, but that was okay. shagged the older girl first to let the young 'un see that things were not all that different with farangs. When her time came there was a lot of giggling and covering of the face but the deed got done and she chose to leave - not, I don't think, upset or hurt but a little too much for her. Our translator said she'd stay and 'finish me off' so I paid the kid for short-time and off she went. The older one then gave me the seeing-to of a life-time, pretty much wore me down to a knub. Droopy tits, stretch marks and generally well worn but she knew her stuff and if she wasn't getting as much out of it as I was then she was giving an oscar-winning performance, which is fine by me. So, although I had limited expectations of the newbie and wasn't particulalry disappointed by her early departure, it worked out well from my point of view and I'd be happy to go for a 'newbie and mentor' setup again. (In fact I'll be back there this tour for seconds with any luck...  )
2) New girl from gogo in Patong: Another first time barfiner, seemed fine in the bar, thrilled to be fined for the first time, after a few post-fine drinks she got a little talkative and by the time we got back to the room she was talking about how she didn't want to do the job but had to for her family etc. A real buzz-killer (I know the situation for these girls, just don't need to be reminded of it). I really didn't want to go on so kicked her out (in the nicest way I could). She came back after a while, wanting to stay (not wanting to lose face by returning home early to her friends after her first barfine), so I let her stay and we slept together but apart. Off she went in the morning, refusing any cash but I slipped some into her jacket when she wasn't looking. Met her a few days later on the beach, had a drink, went our separate ways. Next night she came tripping into TaiPan disco with a farang on her arm and a rose in her hand and I got a punch in passing because some other TG had her tongue down my throat at the time... still nothing nasty. So, will not turn down a newbie, but will assess their attitude carefully in future and only top them off with alcohol if they seem to be able to handle it. (BTW the girl from TaiPan staggered back to my room with me, threw up and passed out, also bled a little when she was praying to the porcelain god (period) so, let her sleep and turfed her out (no payments offered or requested, she was pretty embarassed about her performance) in the early am - another nookie free night : ( )

if your premise is right then why do the staffs at many agogo bar that I go to do pay a lot of attention to wot people leave on the tray.
if the staff didnt get wot goes in the tip box they wouldnt give a damn wots in there. ill ask tonight at one of the kings castle bars.
sorry if I misundestood but if girl ask for 1300 and you give 1600 baht didnt you overtip her........tooo funny. if I get her next time I agree to 2000bhat (im 2k guy) I hab to give her 2300 becoz of you...lol.
i always give a dollar tip to whomever gets my drink. I know this isnt usa but so wot...lol. I thought everyone elses tips are spread throughout the staff.

It happened to me too.
At Nana at the little outside bar to the left of Playskool (or is it Afterskool – I get them confused). Again really cute girl, very little English and very nervous.
I asked the lady behind the bar about bar fining her and this started a shit load of commotion. Ladies appeared from everywhere to tell me it was her first day ‘working’ and that I should be good to her. I was bit unbelieving at first thinking this was a marketing ruse to screw more money out of the ‘farang’ but looking at the girl who was clearly uncomfortable I believed it was for real.
Bar fine paid and taxi back to my apartment. She was so nervous. I had decided while still in the bar that no shagging would take place. It really would have been taking advantage of her. This created a problem however as clearly she ‘expected’ to get f***ed. Anything less and she would think that she had done something wrong or that there was something wrong with her.
Her lack of English meant it was very difficult to explain that ‘yes she was very cute (just how I like them in fact) ’ and ‘I was very attracted to her’ but this her first night she would get by with just a goodnight kiss and cuddle.
I tried hard to explain this to her (honest I did) but in the end I gave in and a very quick and oh so gentle f*** took place.
In the morning I dropped her off on Sukhumvit, near soi 33 and she had no idea where she was. Totally lost. She had an address scribbled on a piece a paper and I saw her to taxi and she was off.
Bizarrely about two months later I was again in Nana and the first girl I laid eyes on was cute little first timer. What a difference, now she was more confident, her English was better (not good but better) and I could see from her gold chains and cd walkman that business had been good. She still looked great and we were quickly of to a ST hotel where the f***ing this time was not over so quickly.

I didn't say they don't get what goes in the tip box, I said that in some bars, they do not get what is left on the tray! kow jai mai? If you want to find out what really happens to the money left on the tray in a specific bar, you should barfine one of the service staff who has worked there awhile. Then, when outside their workplace, ask them (in pasa Thai) what happens to the money left on the tray and "pinkie swear" to them you won't tell anyone what they tell you. Ask them in Thai, not English, you might get a more accurate answer - maybe.

You're dead on about getting the towel off....I forgot about that one. That took a while. Thai girls don't seem to have a great appreciation of their bodies, even when they're real knockouts. I wonder why?
I'm still not sure whether I should "focus" on the new girls. Maybe if it happens again, I just deal with it.

ok to take this one step further.
why would anyone want to work at a bar where the customers tips are shared only by the owners.
wouldnt it be in the best interest of the staff to go work someplace else where they would get their fair share of the gratuities. I lub bkk but some of their busnit practices just dont make sense.
is it true when busnit is down businesses raise prices to make up for lost revenue. in usa busnit lower prices to make more revenue. for example during slow periods in las vegas hotels lower their rate to attract customers.
another example of thai way. I pay bar for lady 18 times, short time. we get alon g, im good customer, I no require nothing more than a leisurely handjob. I pay her fee of 2k.
after 18 th time she raise price to 3k, I say okay....lol. after tinking about it for a while I dont want pay bar anymore...lol. I know 2k for hk is overpaying but im ok wit it. but handjob for 3k I dont want.
i see her at bar and she still likes me as a customer as she wants me to take her but I hesitate, I say maybe later.
by her trying to get me to overpay more than I am already overpaying she ends up wit nothing.......but I still lub her. she so sweet but her busnit sense noot to good...lol. after all I am only her customer or was...lol.
