I planned a surprise trip for one of my girls once. Not a good girl by any measure. ;) Told her we were going to Samet (hour and a half out of Bangkok) and instead took her to Samui. She semi-freaked out about having to get on an airplane (little Bangkok Airways hop down there). She then complained from the airport to the resort (3600 a night on the beach) about the change in plans. Yeah, shag shag shag and all that..... but all the complaining. I thought I was with a falang girl (or falang sex tourist) in disguise.

I think these posts are spot on. Was in Ko Samet last month at Ao Prao resort and it was very nice, but extremely quiet. A little action (and I mean a little) on the main side of the island, but more like the Khao San Rd. crowd and not my favorite scene.
Definitely bring your own girl with you -- I did and that made the trip great (I wouldn't have cared where I was).
I'm heading back on the 12th to LOS and probably gonna try Cha Am this time with my GF. Any comments on that? I wasn't thrilled with Hua Hin so thought I"d give Cha Am a try...

Hey brother Z it's good to hear from you. We've been a little worried about how things turned out with you and Ms. Z. I hope she's feeling better and doing as much as she can to keep her spirits up. Give her my best and tell her our thoughts are with you both. As far as Cha Am is concerned I'd say go for it. When I was there in Sept. I loved it. The beach was very clean, the water was warm, the weather was perfect, and the people were great. The main draw for me was how peaceful and relaxed it was ( That's the part my ex hated the most. Too quiet, nothing to do  ). Rent a couple bikes or motor scooters and ride around exploring all day. I'll probably be coming back the last half of May and I was thinking of giving Hua Hin a try but after your not so glowing comment  I will probably stick with Cha Am again for a few days. Try it, I think you'll both like it. Peace

Spent 3 days in Cha am last week. Beach was quiet and clean.
I was with TG but buddie who was travelling with me picked up a girl in BKK the night before in BKK and took her along.
I know it has been said before, but buddie learned the lesson that there is often a big difference betwen picking up a girl in a club when the music and beer is flowing, and spending a long time with her. Frankly, her limited English and then lack of chemistry resulted in buddie sending the girl back to BKK. I realised this might happen so I had already decided not to stray too far from BKK.
Buddie did find another cutie in Cha Am, although there did not seem to be much action down there.
Just to complete the story for newbies, since we were 4 people with plenty of luggage, I decided to hire a 7 seater minibus with driver since I intended to move around a little.
Cost of bus and driver was 1500 baht per day, plus fuel.

Yep, agree, Cha Am and Hua Hin both OK, Hua Hin a bit more 'touristy" of course, Hilton there is nice, but some good, cheap accomodation at Cha Am, plenty of condos are available for daily rent at 600-1000bt. taking a vehicle a good idea, again, if you want to drive, not too far or difficult, a freeway almost the whole way, and plenty of car rent places around where you can get a car from 1000 bt up e.g. Lumpini car rent. Yeah, you are a romantic P'rip !! - still i guess a beeter result ending up in samui, than when I once took a TG on her first flight, decided to go to see the parents, so i get the tickets, early morning flight, charge out to Don Muang, just get to the plane in time - we touch down at Udon - THEN she says to me, why we come to Udon ?? I live in Ubon ???
