Be very very careful on this one. Nine of us working in the Middle East married and bought homes in Bangkok. None are married now and I am raising my son in the US from this deal.
Many Many Thai Girls unlike filipino girls do not like to leave their country and if they do will either want to move back or move their entire family to the US. Things can change in a hurry.
I hate to be so negative but 9 out of 9 was not great odds.

For a Thai to get a Tourist visa to the USA is almost impossible unless they can show evidence that indicates a strong reason that they will return to Thailand when Their visa expires. Some thing that will help are proof of Real Estate or buiness owned. Family members or children living in Thailand are not considered a reason to compell a person to return as people leave them behind all the time. To get a student visa is only a little easier but carefully scrutinized. (To study English is not a good reason). If you legally marry someone in Thailand, and then try to get a visa for your wife you will encounter a long and very difficult journey which will probably require legal assistence to complete all the paper work. The easiest and fastest visa is called the K1 Fiance visa. This allows your fiance to come to the USA for 90 Days for the purpose of marriage, if you do get married then this temporary status is changed to permanent status, after 3 years citizenship can be applied for. Should you not get married your fiance must go home no harm no foul. If in any Visa application process the INS discovers (and most of the time they do) that your lady has been employed in a bar or any other area of prostitution,or been arrested for anything the application will be denied on the basis of moral terpitude. absoultly no appeal.

Butterflyboy is correct in everything he said. I spent many many hours in the US Embassy. Another requirement was the girl needed a birth certificate. Few Thai's have this and the paperwork I ended up doing was difficult, expensive and very time consuming It took nearly a year. This was after I was married.
Prior I had obtain tourist Visa's and was only sucessful because I showed my employment in the Middle East and therefore they figured she would return as I was not staying in the United States and we actually owned a home in Bangkok.
I would guess after 911 things have probably become more difficult

If I may add to what Dave has said, it says more than just about the "lovely little creatures". It takes two to tango. It does say a lot about the differences in cultures and the difficulty to live in a country other than the one you are from. Even with a non-bargirl, the odds are not good for a successful relationship. Don't blame it all on the Thais.

I agree with Abe. As I have posted earlier, it is very difficult for them to assimilate the Western culture as it is so different from their own. And to top it, being wrenched away from friends and family, their entire support system cannot be easy on anyone. Admittedly there are a lot of girls into this for the money but then there are a lot who just want to better their lot and are prepared to take the risk of entering a totally new world. Unfortunately, a majority of them are not able to adjust.

I wasn't laying any blame. But to expand on my earlier comment about " these lovely little creatures" it is oh so easy to get involved 'cos so many are charming without taking on board all the other issues as well. By that I am meaning culture, family ties, etc. etc. If you can take it ALL then be careful.

you are spot on. I am wrestling with my own decision regarding Jit. I believe she is honest and serious. However, without what you call "the support system" will it work? My gut feel is that it is easier for me to move to Thailand than for her to move to the UK.

The only way it can work is if she is qualified and takes up a job in your country. The problem in most cases would be that the man goes off to work everyday and the woman is at home all day by herself.
Ofcourse you could settle down with her in Thailand if your life permits it. You must really see a lot in her and love the woman considering you are looking at that possibility. Good luck to both of you
