Just had a chat with my wife who has 2 sisters in Japan. Seems that if the restaurant is legit then the dancers can be just that if they want to be. But beware there are a lot who 'work' as well and get big $$$s and maybe hook up with a regular ATM who will put you in the shade. Worse is when the ATM is Yakuza or has Yakuza connections. Once into that the girl has very little choice of what she can do, any disobedience can get a beating or worse.
Maybe best find another alternative.

That's bullshit.
The Thai girl will be in debt to the tune of hundreds of thousands of baht to the racketeers here who got her a Japanese visa, paid for her air fare, took the risk that Japanese Immigration at Narita would reject her, etc. Those (usually Thai) gangsters also pay for a nok leng to escort the girl, more likely girls, to Japan. In Japan an "agent" (usually Yakuza) buys the debt off the Thais for a large multiple, now the girl(s) are each in hock to HIM for a few million baht each, and this "agent" places them in a job, with no resemblance to "Thai classical fance" unless Thai classical dance is mostly horizontal. Passports ARE withheld, as a precaution against girls escaping. When they do they are sometimes returned to the Yakuza, sometimes deported back to Thailand. The deportees are the lucky ones.
FYI I don't get this from the newspapers. I spent 18 months in this racket, many years ago, as a "specialist" working up scams to get the Japanese Consulate to approve visas. I personally succeeded in more than 50 instances, for which my Thai partner and I were paid $2000 US (50,000 baht at the time) for each. All but about 7-8 were men, who were paying cash up front to the agent here. The rest were women who were in hock. Their visas were harder to get and I quit doing this for anyone but men, early on as the success rate and thus my return on my time and effort was much higher. I spoke to each and every woman. Some knew the score, some thought they were going to Japan to work in high paying jobs as -- well, might as well have been as classical Thai dancers.
You say they'd be safer in Japan? Well from the inside of the Thai labor racket back in 1991-92 let me tell you that is BULLSHIT. The Japanese treat the Thais like shit, and the Yakuza are not benign employers. This is INDENTURED SERVITUDE and the Japanese and Yak often cheat the girls by the time honored "company store" method plus usurous (loan shark) interest rates so they have little to no chance of working out of debt.
And that is why I walked away from a "business" that had netted me 100,000 baht ($4000 US) at the time) a month for very occasional work -- the racketeers in Thailand and Japan who were and are doing this are scum of the earth.

Some other girls I knew whom work in Japanese style club can speak very nice Japanese and NEVER BEEN in Japan, they make lots of money! The Japapese Sugar Daddy made them rich. And most important is they all are happy working in their own country, no one can rip them off!!

Sure, what you descibe goes on but it's not the only game in town nor do all Yakuza operate the same.
I know of a substanial number of women from throughout asia as well as the US that keep coming back again and again on new contracts so maybe not all rackets are of the type you worked in.

You are not alone in having some insight into Japan and the Japanese. I also spent some time in Japan, my first wife is Japanese (from Osaka, now works at Japanese Embassy in Washington DC AFAIK).

Sauron - I don't see the relevance of your having "spent some time" here or your first wife having been Japanese. Is she related to one of the 16 different major families in Japan? Unless she was involved in one of the families one way or another, the majority of people living here don't know anything about what goes on inside the families other than what they see in movies.
One thing that I'm totally lost on though is how does saying that not all families operate their businesses the same come to be equated to apologizing for them all? You happened to have worked for a shitty one, so what, let's just hope that SB's girlfriend ends up working for one of the better ones. And, if he can find out where she is working, maybe I can be of use as I don't see you offering your assistance.

The assistance I offer to the fellow's GF is to advise her NOT TO GO. The same advise I give any Thai girl who proposes to go work illegally in ANY foreign country. Thai girls are better off in Thailand.
The general Japanese attitude toward any and all Asians other than themselves is NOT a positive one. You dispute this as a general matter?
Then kindly remind me how the Japanese government treats Chinese, Koreans, etc who have lived in Japan, born in Japan, for centuries? They are treated as ALIENS forced to be registered and fingerprinted.
C'mon tell us about the burakumin, formerly called eta, the Japanese untouchables -- tell us how the Japanese treat some of their OWN.
