BK what do you believe is the best way to learn Thai for a guy that is in LOS for periods of maybe 1 month 2 times per year.
Get a personal tutor who will teach you a couple of hours a day, and then head out to Beer Garden and test it out!

Got these from Metro magazine:

Speak Thai as Thais do Learn to speak, read and write Thai from an experienced professional tutor with a sense of humour! Call Tip (02-748-8170).

or

Learn Thai according to your day to day needs from a teacher with years of experience teaching expatriates. ... Call Khun Kritikaan at 014278619

If you have cell phone with SMS it works great for communicating with TGF. Messages are usually sent instantly and if the girls english is not well she can think about how to respond without feeling pressured.

Remember, eventhough SMS and e-mail helps a lot with communication, there is no replacement for talking in person. She gets better at pronunciation and you get better at recognizing her words with the Thai accent.
 Just my opinion....

I started with a phrase book and going to restaurants during off hours and asking waitresses to help me.  Hehe -but it worked!

Right now I'm lucky to have found a private tutor in the US with college level english at a very reasonable price.

Tapes help a lot - my favorite is Thai for Beginners. Available at amazon.com

Learning to read and write takes a lot of time but will help refine your pronunciation.

http://www.thai-language.com is also a good resource.

For me, picking up the language takes time but it gives me a lot more confidence to get off the beaten path and make new friends.

But be warned, your TG will not always be helpful.  If you khao jai too much, she loses her advantage.

Thanks for the info.  I like reading about the history of the language but it seems hard to learn.  I guess I have to get into it, down and dirty or else I'll never learn.  I believe one step at a time with get me where I want to be.
