FWIW, I've tried this with a couple of females who I know are not interested to lie about their age, and generally they just don't know (or I've not been able to ask properly). Don't know for sure whether it's my Thai communications skills or that those who are not with real Chinese ancestry just don't care.

seubeu- I don't think it has so much to do with Chinese ancestry as it does just being something that has or has not been adopted into their belief system. My girlfriend has no Chinese in her history at all and yet their whole family goes by it as do most of the neighbors in their community.
In the end, if she knows, she knows, if she doesn't, she doesn't. But, if she does know, she is less likely to be able to lie about it than she is able to get a fake ID. Just because ID's can be faked doesn't mean one ignores them and just because some girls don't know their sign doesn't mean that it never works. Use whatever tools one has to keep one's ass out of trouble is the way I look at it.
Al - "What then? JAIL???" Never having been in the situation I can't tell you from experience but I have heard the sum of 50,000 mentioned by various people as helping to return one's freedom but I don't know how much stock I would put in that and I also don't know if they would make you sit in a cell for a while although I doubt it, "catch and release". Also, cell time usually means paper work and paper work leaves trails.
That having been said, although I doubt anyone will mention their getting caught, I'd be interested to know what happened also.

I'm not saying don't try, I'm just saying it may not work. And even if it does, be careful, as once some of them get on to why we ask you know they will ALL learn the correct answers. Sort of like we used to do when we tried to get into bars when we were underage here.

You bring up some very good points. One thing I like about this "trick" though is, unlike asking to see their ID where they will know one is looking at their age, guys with any tact at all can play the trick without them even realize what is going on. But then again, considering how much tact, or lack there of some guys have, it is better to be careful. 
Out of curiosity, the girls you asked who didn't know their signs, where were they from? If I guessed Bangkok or the surrounding region, would I be far off? Most of the girls I have tried it on were from Isarn so it could be a regional thing as I have heard that North and North Eastern girls are more superstitious.

I know I've asked one who is from somewhere near Sukhothai, another from Kanchanburi. ÝOthers from Bangkok. ÝI'll have to try this on a nice Isaarn girl next time. ÝAnd you're right, it's all in the subtlety. ÝAlthough the first one I mentioned probably figured out I was trying to get a read on her age, she won't tell me because she thinks I'll regard her as too old. ÝMy guess is she is at least over 30, so no worries on the underage thing. ÝI actually prefer more experienced women, in most regards anyway.

I just learned last night that I had sex with a underaged girl 3 times.
