Tell your girl up front how much money you have to spend. Figure 4 to 5K for booze, food etc. Give the money to her in small bills. You should have a great time. Bring BUG SPRAY and toilet paper. Be prepared for the squat toilet.

When I went up to Chang Mai to visit my tgf parents I wasnt asked to give any money there was no mention of it My advice is to stay in a hotel because you can expect in addition to what everyone else said No AC Noisy roosters waking you up at 5am (ugh I hate them) no farang food flys everyone staring at you like your from outerspace (when I went her whole village just came out and stared at me all day but that wasnt so bad its easy to get them all to laugh they were nice folks) the absolute worst part was the bus ride though I didnt mind everything else.. take a plane if your going really far if possible

Looks like I have had completely different experiences from most brothers. I first went to my girl's village less than two weeks after I first met her - having first returned to the UK and then flown out again to Thailand. It was a brilliant experience and I was looked after by all the village and we had a a brilliant party to celebrate Christmass (ok I paid for a lot of drink, but I'd have done that anywhere) and it was one of the best nights of my life. I accept I might have lower expectations or standards compared to other brothers as I wasn't put off with the lack of all the home comforts and was more than happy to live the simple life. Just go with respect as you would any other visit to a family and start from the point of view that a family are iinviting you into their home, lives and hearts - or am I naive romantic?? I agree that the bus journey can be a bit of a bind - I've even made the trip to the village by myself by bus - so a flight is ok as the time will probably be an hour or so at most and many Thais do fly home also. Anyway that was over six years ago and I've visited the village probably somewhere in the region of a dozen times - I'll be travelling up to the village for Songkran in April - my previous experience of Songkran in the village was quite moving, a world away from the riot that passes for the celebration in Pattaya. Have fun, and respect.

forget the Hotel, stay with the Family and experince life in the village. i know I was a total newbie at the time when I done it and at the time it was frightening. but in the end I had a great time with the locals and would not have missed it with the world. i experienced something which many will not see and I envy many others who do this every week/month/year. i'm not sure if I could live upcountry with what I saw when I was there, but I would be willing to give it a try.

Go and with an open mind and spend a few days living as the locals do. I spent 4 days in Issan, sleeping on a paper thin mattress until the chickens/dogs/buffallo woke me up at first light, washed with cold water and a bowl, squat for a sh_te, and ate the chickens and pigs that woke me up. Having holidayed all over the world in 4 & 5 star hotels and also spending a few days in pattaya and bangkok on that particular holiday, I can say hand on on heart that my few days in Issan was the the best of the lot. Sure you'll get the odd scrounger trying to get booze and fags out of you - because they think you'll give them singha, johnny walker and malboro - just give them the the cheap crap they drink and smoke and they'll stop asking (my girls idea). I've been back a couple of times since and the novelty does wear off a bit, but you've got to try it once. You'll maybe look at your TG differently once you see where she's come from as well... You will make your TG very happy and gain the respect of the family and villagers. My girl was really worried I would hate it, but she didn't stop smiling for weeks afterwards. You can always pay a visit to the supermarket before you go for some loo roll and farang food if you don't want to go completely native!
