Interesting topic.
I made my first trip to Thailand in 2004 and I have to say that most of my day-time activities were spent in blissful solitude; touring the city, a day trip to Ayuthaya, dining, etc.
The main problem with taking a BG to a nice place is that there was really nothing to talk to them about, at least the girls whose company I enjoyed at night. Fun they were, but they couldn't hold a basic conversation; most spoke barely passable English and I am willing to bet most of them haven't gone past grade 4. While there's nothing wrong with that, it certainly creates a huge barrier in terms of communication. I can't see myself listening to "you come from where?" and "sooooooo big" 24 hours a day. Thus, dining at the Oriental will be nothing more than a grand waste of time and money (this is, of course, strictly my perspective). I will far more enjoy my own company.
Of course, once darkness falls, I'm game!

I think it is mainly for the farang's own ego and satisfaction to take a BG to a posh place. A BG (majority, ok, you PC crowd ) really has no idea why a place is a 3,4 or 5 star. ( and they don't care, they go to give you face) To them, a bowl of noodle on the sidewalk is already very satisfying. But for a farang, especially those that come from upper-middle class (or higher) society back home, it's impossible to be squatting on the streets of Bangkok gulping down a bowl of fishball noodle every day. He misses home, he misses his statue from home, he wants to remind himself that he is still an important person, even in BKK. There is nothing wrong with any of it, it's whatever makes you happy. Yes, I am guilty as charged. And like someone said earlier, being in a posh place like that does not really embarrase the BG, I am usually the one who is embarrased. So I do not take them to those places anymore. If I have a need to go ( nostalgia), I call up my buddies in BKK and we go on our own. Then go get the BG's afterwards, take them to their night market food stalls places or whatever. Everyone is happy !

AND..... IMO and what the tg's have said.. ingeneral.... they don't understand why someone would spend so much money on "JUST" food.
So, taking them an expensive restaurant is probably a waste of $$$ and should be done only for your enjoyment and not theirs.
AND, I'm guilty of taking them to nice restaurants.

Quite a few years ago I was at Orientals BBQ - which I just happen to like so much and often go at least once when in BKK - and NO - usually I do NOT bring just any BG there - but if she is of the statue I earlier described - yes of course! And guys: please, there are ladies in LOS that are smarter and brighter than many of us, with good educations etc. Who says I cant meet some of them. For pits sake: I have been travelling the country for 28 years! To implicate that I - or anyone else - could not meet a girl of better social standard is just ridiculous.
Anyways: at this visit I sat by myself and just enjoyed being alive and having this wonderful dinner. Already when I entered I had this little waitress that was just soooo cute. I spoke a few words in thai to her and she reacted more than I expected. She also returned a 1000 times to service me and each time said something or asked a small question. I had not even in my wildest fantasy expected that I could have a remote chance on her let alone at THAT establishment!! I also felt I did not want to spoil anything by being "rude" and ask her out. I took her constant visits as a good friendly service. But she was just so cute.....
And finally I very carefully embedded a small sentence like ".....and you get off tonight when they close....?!" To my big surprise she said yes and asked me what I was going to do. I said "nothing" of course and proposed that we met on neutral grounds. I later understood that what she did was a very big no-no on these premises and a big risk for her!
But she remained with me for a couple of days and we saw each other at daytime and after her work. It was a stunning short relation and I almost got carried away to dangerous grounds......
So my dear bros, are you happy now? I did NOT eat with her at Oriental - instead I ate HER at several different locations!! hahaha!
Anything can happen in LOS - and certainly not all of it is in the bar streets. Those places I can hardly stand anymore - so booooring!
Eat anywhere you like with anyone you want at your side. Dont give a rats ass what other people around you think - and have fun!

Dont waste your money !
It would be like feeding Strawberries to Pigs mate, they wont appreciate it.
Better off going with a western pal and then off for a shagfest after, the whole GF experience is much better cheaper IMHO, and you wont feel dissapointed afterwards.

It never ceases to amaze me how a midleaged old fart like me can have (in my terms) a sensible and stimulating conversation over several days (if not weeks and in one case years!) with a 20 something BG.
Considerin' our respective backgrounds, difference in culture the enormous age difference etc., and why we are doing what we are doing, we shouldn't really have anything in common after the first few hours in the bar (bonking related action/conversation excepted!).
On the other hand (so to speak!) I usually meet BGs who I wont click with and we never really get passed the, "Where you come from?", "What is snow like?" sorta dialogue. These BGs are not worth puting much effort into IMHO and I get over the sex part quite quickly (too quickly sometimes!) and move onto another BG.
Conclusion; it's not a scientific thing, it's a lot more to do with the personalities of the people involved. I could have a miserable time with a BG in an expensive restaurant whereas another Bro could have a brilliant time with the same BG in the same restaurant, go figure!

I have had a similar experience. Lots of interesting BGs,
lots with whom I can't think of thing to to talk about.
As for lack of education or surplus of education, I have met a lot of educated people who were incredibly boring, tedious, dull, and uninteresting in conversation.
Also, lots of very interesting folks with very modest educations.
My experience is that the ability to participate in an interesting conversation is not related to level of education.

I took an exceptionally wise and experienced freelancer to the Chinese restaurant on the top floor of Times Square in mid January. She was beautifully turned out - tasteful and yet subdued. Her comportment was low key and refined, her posture impeccable. And yet the staff there treated us with a kind of cold contempt that I never experienced elsewhere in Thailand with BG's. My conclusion, at least on that occasion: it was not her alone, but the combination of her with me, that made them draw conclusions about her. The food was good, and I just smiled and treated the staff respectfully, as I always do, and they lightened up a bit. When we were walking out of the place, we saw photos of the Queen and her friends dining there, so I guess it's a real hi-so place to be avoided when with ladies of the night.
Had many room service meals from the great restaurants in the Sheraton and the room service staff were always polite to a fault with my BG's. In many ways that can be a lot more fun.
