Tight, skimpy clothing is out, say universities

Public and private universities across the country say they'll get tough on students wearing inappropriate clothing, to try to curb the rising number of revealing outfits seen on campuses. Vice-rectors for student affairs from 30 public and private universities met Deputy Education Minister Varakorn Samkoses on Monday to discuss measures to discourage students from dressing inappropriately.
The universities agreed to join forces against such outfits. Revealing tops and shorts are particularly popular among female students, who are also often seen wearing tight skirts and undersized shirts, said Mr Varakorn.
The meeting agreed to circulate a letter to presidents of all university councils urging them to address the problem seriously. Lecturers will play a key role in discouraging students from wearing revealing or inappropriate outfits to class.
The Education Ministry and the Culture Ministry will seek cooperation from manufacturers of student uniforms to stop producing versions that are sexy or bare too much flesh, Mr Varakorn added.
''We will not specify that manufacturers must produce student uniforms that follow the university dress code,'' he said.
''We understand the nature of students that they want to dress fashionably,'' he added. ''Their uniforms can be trendy but manufacturers must take into consideration what is appropriate. They should not encourage students to compete in wearing sexy uniforms,'' said Mr Varakorn.
He conceded the present provision for students to assess the performance of faculty members had discouraged the latter from reprimanding or warning students who dressed inappropriately.
Thammasat University vice-rector Prinya Tevanaruemitrkul said the meeting opposed the issuance of a regulation for all students to wear uniforms.
Currently, universities have various stances on the matter, some allowing students full freedom of dress, others insisting on uniforms, he noted.
But the aim was to encourage students to dress properly, and to persuade them to show a sense of social responsibility in their choice of clothes.
Padungyos Duangmala, vice-rector of Prince of Songkhla University, said about 5-10% of students at his university, mostly those studying social sciences, dressed inappropriately.
Chalee Thongruang, vice-rector of Naresuan University in Phitsanulok province, said revealing outfits were inappropriate for a learning environment, distracting both students and faculty members.

Boys start drinking at 11, girls at 15 - Road accidents killing 4,000 teenagers a year

Thai boys start drinking as early as 11 years old, and girls as young as 15, a study by Thai Health Promotion Foundation has found.
Suriyadev Tripati, chief of the foundation's youth and children's health division, said road accidents were the most frequent cause of deaths among Thai teenagers last year.
On average, road accidents kill about 4,000 teenagers annually, or 11 people each day.
About 40% of those accidents were related to drinking, said Dr Suriyadev.
A study found male youths take their first drink as early as 11 years old, while female teenagers start drinking at 15.
One million male teenagers aged between 11 and 19 drink compared to about 200,000 female teenagers between the ages of 15 and 19.
The study also found that 90 in every 1,000 female teenagers who have sex become pregnant and are at high risk of being infected with sexually transmitted diseases (STD).
Dr Suriyadev was speaking at a seminar on youth issues held by the Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health to mark Youth Day on Sept 20.
He said Thai Health found children addicted to computer games were spending up to 2,500 baht a month on their games, up to 500 baht a month on mobile phone expenses, and more than 800 baht on junk food.
The Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) has reported increasing numbers of young people undergoing rehabilitation programmes for drug abuse.

Just go to MBK and hang out near the Cell phone shops and food court. See how many hot students approach you/make eye contact.

LOLZ. True, it's been that way for awhile. Some helpful posts, sure. Some pure fantasy though.
"Students" is a pretty vague term anyway. Any girl can say she is a student or put on a uniform, are you really that concerned if she's attending some sort of classes?
Out of my own area of expertise, the two soapies with the youngest girls has been Nataree and Catherine for a long time, and yes, plenty of students mixed in. Not the preppies and yuppies you see walking around Siam Center, mind you, usually commercial and accounting college, hotel management college type girls.

Those of you who want to find students in BK, Its simple. Go the the RCA clubs playing hip hop on friday or sat. Hip Hop clubs are filled with girls 18-21. A neccisity when visting these clubs is to speak thai or go with a thai local (non bg).
