Point taken, if he was not obviously a thief I would never of done so, from my point of view I do not like thieves, it puts it in a different perspective or so you think it is excussable.
Maybe when something of yours was nicked you might think differently like I do.

The certain member must have not liked your phone very much. I assume you had the Nokia 3650 or 3660, then (round dialing area) - check out the Nokia 6600, since you're in the market for a new phone - same features, more 'manly' looking.
I gotta question the wisdom of suggesting to place *ANY* expensive phone, in the open, on a table, in a bar - especially considering the proclivity of phones to get stolen. That's like suggesting "Go ahead, give the beggar children money - it makes them leave you alone" 
The 6600 is also small enough to fit in your pant pocket, constantly.

So I called MyFav’s number this morning and she had switched her number to my Thai phone (I let her keep it for me). Hopefully she can get a new passport and ID before my next trip. She said she will be back in Laos for most of the month of November. I asked if she needed any money, and she still hasn't requested any...

Then this answers your question, no you are not being scammed - directly.
Are you being told the truth? Maybe. Girls get their stuff stolen all the time. I was meeting Soi33NoCanDo and two minutes before I got there, she got her handbag ripped off of her shoulder by a guy on a motorcycle. She tried to hang on and she got dragged about 20 feet, left her shoulder bleeding and her shirt ripped. In the bag was her picture mobile phone and about 2k baht.
However, something to think about is that if you give her money to replace these lost items, other things are more likely to be "lost" in the future. You should decide on what basis your monetary relationship with her will take, not her, IMHO.
A related example, a little thing, I'll admit - I gave Dew my good dictionary about a month ago, as she was always reading it and looking up words. I stayed at her place last week, and needed to look up a word, I asked her for the dictionary. She said "I lend to my brother, he want to learn English". Where is the dictionary? Who knows, but she did not value it enough to keep it.
Mental note to self: things I give her will likely not belong to her the next time I see her.

In my TGF's former a-gogo, they had cliques of all sorts. The good girls, the bad girls, the girls from this or that mooban, and theft was rampant.
For example, I'd picked up my TGF a t-shirt from Yosemite National Park in California. Had embroidred mosquitoes on it with the words, "Bite Me." She had it drying on the line above the club where they all slept (Soi Cowboy), and someone grabbed it. She was bummed.
But just a few weeks later, and not long before she was scheduled to quit the scene, she saw it hanging on the same line! So she "stole it back" though she admitted feeling guilty about that (go figure!). Kinda makes you wonder about the IQ of the BG that stole it to begin with, as there is not another shirt like it in BKK, shit for brains, I think.
Anyway, she got it back, quit the club, and the rest is history (geez, maybe I should post some updates under Falling in Love, ha!).
That was 2.5 years ago, but we were in her fomer club the other night celebrating her birthday (loads of fun with a bar full of sentimental and drunk go-go ladies -- dirty olde man that I am). But nothing much has changed there, still the same cliques and rivalries.
So yep, stuff does get stolen,

ColoradoGuy has hit the nail on the head here. Thais tend to give things away or sell them without any regard for where they came from and any sentimental value which may be attached t othem.
Buy a BG a nice dress and next week her sister may well own it.
Buy something more valuable and it will quite probably be pawned quite soon. Gold and mobile phones often go this route, and frequently to pay gambling losses.
Frankly none of us really can say what has truly happened to this mobile phone, and the talking dictionary, but when things are lost here it can often be that they were "lost"gambling rather than through theft.
As for simcards, the BG's pass them about freely. If you call a number and find someone else answering it, it may just be that the card has been lent to a friend, or even sold.. many BG's have more than one simcard. (there's often one for customers and one for family members such as mother).

Well on my on last visit when we went to MyFav’s apartment to pack her things for the trip to Phuket I was surprised that she still had EVERYTHING I had ever bought her. The other thing that surprised me was how little she had, and how modestly she lived. A good chunk of her wardrobe was the stuff I got her last trip. I think us going shopping was a much bigger deal for her then I had originally thought. It’s funny but I never understood why she was so frugal with my money, since I have almost never said no to anything she asked for. Typical of this is her refusing to let me buy her a belt that she liked because “400 Baht to much!”
I am inclined to believe her until she proves herself other then trust worthy; I do now think she was really worried that I would be upset with her for losing my gifts.

How did you meet?
It is the bar-life and the friends they make there that screw a lot of them up. If she hasn't been involved in that scene then you are probably on to a winner.
After all, many of them go to the bars to make big money, regardless of what it takes. The ones who keep out of it can prove to be a lot less materialistic.
