It always surprises me that guys who fall in love with hookers after very little time get disappointed when the girl either cheats on them, steals from them, lies to them etc.

Fair comment CG. The original poster talked about 'the girl of his dreams' and I wrongly implied an emotional connection, rather than the purely financial one normal in a p4p relationship.
But I think the point still stands. We really shouldnt be surprised when 'bad girls' behave badly.
Noone is forced into prostitution here. It's a career choice for the greedy and/or lazy. There are millions of girls in Bangkok who seem to survive on 8-12k as secretaries, bank clerks, shop assistants without resorting to turning tricks.
The girls who do decide on P4P want to get 'richer' quick and good luck to them. Stealing from naive Johns is hardly inconsistent behaviour, is it?

Would you, or anyone else you know, do the same and leave an average of 3 - 4 months wages (for a local shop assistant) within easy reach of a Prostitute in London, or Paris, or Frankfurt, or New York, etc..
Now do you get my drift...

While I agree that no one is 'forced' into prostitution, I do think that your characterisation of 'greedy and lazy' is unfairly harsh vis a vis those who work in p4p -- I'm sure there are just as many legitimate or tragic circumstances that get girls involved, as well as the greedy or lazy ones.
Then again, this is a thread that seems to be filled with generalisations

Daffy, you might be right. You probably are. Maybe I over-generalised. And was a bit harsh.
I guess I mean that many of the girls are in it to get rich quick and to avoid working hard for what is - let's face it - very poor wages. There may be some who are forced into it through tragic circumstances, but I can't help seeing all these office and shopgirls on the BTS in the morning and respecting them for not taking the P4P route. And those girls are in the majority. So what do they have that hookers don't?
Incidentally, my place I work at (which pays roughly twice the average salaries for all levels of job) is currently tryng to recruit 5 secretaries, a receptionist, two general admin girls and a coffee girl to serve clients.
I know I sound like a reactionary, but there are opportunities for people willing to work. P4P might not be pleasant for them, but I'm sure many see it as an 'easy' option.

I'd say mostly they have a normal life, a normal family and normal expectations. Sure, things are different in Thailand and the eastern brand of logic ensures you rip out a few hand fulls of hair every now and then but basically the same attitudes to prostitution as a career DO apply - " its not for me" appears to be a common attitude amongst said office and shop girls.
Translated from Thinglish is this reply from a regular Phuket BG of mine a couple of years ago when I said words to the effect that it was an easy way to make a living - "You think its easy? You give it a try. Its not so bad with you because you speak a little bit of Thai but most times I've got no idea what they are talking about. I don't understand and they talk and talk. Should I smile now or should I cry I don't know. I have to guess all the time - and if I guess wrong what then? will he hurt me - will he pay me - will he get violent when he gets drunk - yeah, you give it a try and then tell me how easy it is!"

Most likely: an opportunity, and circumstances that allow them to be satisfied with what they make.
The way I see it, is that you judge from Bangkok, yet many girls (and guys) come from poorer provinces, and lack many of the opportunities people in the big city have - namely, an education, and papers to prove it - think about it, if a girl comes from a poor Isaan province, her options are to work in the field with her parents for a very low sum - this might be sufficient, but then some hardship falls on the family (father dies, someone has an accident), and suddenly what they earn is no longer enough. In societies without a social net to catch people, it's veyr easy to go from bad to worse -- so before you know it, some relative (there's always one) suggests to her to go to Bangkok and Pattaya to earn better wages -- and sends her to a bar or a gogo...

Would your HR department hire a charming, friendly, but brown skinned Isaan girl as the receptionist? As a secretary (she has great typing and cut-paste skils) ? Admin girl, or coffee girl? I'm sure your office has HR guidelines and criteria for these positions - how many girls that you meet at Nana or Soi Cowboy meet those? (actually, I'm curious myself - what are your hiring criteria?)

Of course they would. There are several isaan girls working here and as I mentioned the other day, we even have a katoey or two. A girl in my team is from Udon, and a great little worker she is also - bright as a button and very meticulous.
I'm sure you're right though. The options for the girls coming INTO Bangkok must be relatively limited.
I have much to learn about Thailand.
