I agree, TPE. But I didn't want to come off as appearing to say "falangs BELONG in that class." (like that's their status in life forever... or making is sound like all ____ belong on the farm or belong in a field picking cotton)
Yes, they ARE typically in that class, but that's just a fact.

TPE, the order is more to do with money,
education and power, nothing to do with
race period. BTW there are a number of
Thais that donot have a drop of Chinese
blood in them that would head this list.

The one exception that I'd take to this is that IME local police were pariahs. Sure, would have more power and sometimes more money, but the people in my neighborhood wouldn't associate with them OR let their children associate with the children of the boys in brown. Didn't want anything to rub off, I suppose.

just a generalization - and obviously changes from place to place - my dear old Xenophobic Mum would have Asians at the boittom of any list, regardless !! As to a list of influential Thais without chinese heritage ....mmmm have to query that one, or maybe we have different MPs [ and not Massage parlour in this case ] we associate with old hand !

So farangs are at the same level as bar girls? I have little hard to belive that this is the case everywhere. I have hard to belive that they treat bar girls with the same respect they have treated me.
Seen with thai eyes I'm very wealthy. My income is probably 10 times higher than the average thai. And as I had understand money is important in Thailand. With money you get respect and status. Thai's (at least some of them) seems to be very materialistic.
I have also quit good education compared to most thais (especially compared with bar girls). So I can have quit intellectual conversations with educated thais (that can talk english) and I have never noticed any signs of disrespect or contempt. They seems to enjoy talking with me and we have had great times.
They have sometimes taken me to expensive restaurants (maybe to impress) and I have sometimes done the same. I know that some of them maybe cannot afford it, but they have done it anyway (yes, they paid). I have hard to belive they would do this for a simple bar girl? Or do this for a poor thai rice farmer they don't know so well?
I have also got the feeling that they like to take me with them to their friends. Just to show that they "know a farang". I got the feeling that most of them are very curious about me. And everywhere I go, they are very friendly and hospitable to me.
I should add that most of these people are middle-class people so maybe it's different in other classes in the society. These people seems to be very modern and they seems to have quit good knowledge about Europe and USA.
Ok, when I was in my girlfriends village (where she was born) and visited her relatives I get the feeling that not everybody liked me. I just had the feeling that some of them didn't liked that a farang have picked one of their girls. There where some hostilility in their eyes. But most of them where friendly to me also there.
I can only speak from my own experience. Maybe I just have been lucky. Or maybe they all are playing a game with me. Who knows...

There are definitely still pure Thais (or at least those with very little Chinese lineage) around that are influential. A lot (but not all of course) of those with titles (Khunying, Mom Jao, Mom Rachawong, etc.) are pure Thai. Some (but not all) high ranking police and military personnel are Thai and enjoy very posh lifestyles (through gratuities kind of like the Chinese-Indo relationship in Indonesia).

Michael Boy: Sorry to say but I gotta agree with PackRipper on his assessment of how falangs are viewed in Thailand. I (Asian American) have been on both ends, where I was seen and known as an obvious non-Thai (and the treatment that went along with it) and also where I was with rich Thai-Chinese friends, and I was mistaken for Thai-Chinese (and the treatment that went along with that) - I think I prefer being mistaken for a rich Thai-Chinese! 
Hey, I'd love to fit in and think that I am loved and adored all the time too, but I know the reality, no amount of money, education or use of big words will undo the stereotypes that people have. So I just do my best to behave, say "please" and "thank you", chew with my mouth closed, and laugh at all the jokes. Take it for what it's worth ...
Remember, this isn't Japan where the falangs there are viewed in almost celebrity status. The reason you felt some animosity in the village but not in BKK among the upper class, is that with money, you just buy yourself a better class of enemy.

Agreed P'rip - but note you add " very little" chinese heritage, and also only some ! .... anyway, irrelevant - I can say for the most part Ive always been treated respectfully by Thais of all standards, and that includes members of the Royalty, parlimentarians, high ranking Army and Police personal ... and of course plenty of Rice farmers [ and their daughters ! ] - M/boy, sure it will be the same with you - all we are pointing out, is that, like most societies, or especially Asian, a class system does operate, and certain people dont necessarily abide by the 'all men are created equal" principle. For all my travels in Asia, I personally find Thais by far the most acceptable towards foreigners/farangs/gweilo etc ... - and to be sure, the majority of whom, visiting LOS, daily do numerous acts which are considered rude, or disrespectful, to the average Thai.

hello to all on this board,
this is my very 1st posting, been to los once & plan to visit for the second time in few months. IME i would have to disagree on the subject of TG's not attracted to thick guys. not built like a bodybuilder but somewhat muscular. had lots of looks from all types of TG's, flirting, etc...even from some female farangs ( word for that ? ) again IME & IMO females in los ( in general ) are attracted to guys ( physically ) who has a " pritty boy " face, clean cut, dress clean, & a fit body. i'm talking about asian men, farangs i have no idea. just like to say this is the best site so far & hope to run into some of the guys on this board on my next trip, by the way posts on ORBIT & BARON...fun/funny stuff, so jealous !
