Arcadius,

I believe you took me wrong on beauty concept as well as on Diane Keaton.

Looking for Mr. Goodbar (1977) shows a young beautiful Diane that I find very sexy... also.
See info at: Ýhttp://us.imdb.com/title/tt0076327/

About beauty:
As for music and noise, the difference is in the harmony and harmony has its own rules.
In the case of music, the harmony's rules are so straight that can be reduced to math, even!

Human beauty has its own harmonic rules, made of proportions more than dimensions, made of smoothness more than colours and many other details too complicate to be mentioned here and now.

If you examine with attention a Greek classical statuary, the Venus of Botticelli as most of the artistic representations of human beauty as a concept, you'll see that many details will be a little out of average, with preference for baby's proportions and peculiarities.

BTW, if as you said, Classic statuary just has regular features and average sizes, I must have very small eyes and a monster between my legs... and nobody ever told me.

Composing music, to apply the same harmonic rules can produce different melodies, and then you can play them with different instruments.
Sure, you obtain results that sound completely different, but still they are music, not noise.

That's why I disagree that Botticelli or Rubens or any other artist may avoid the use of the same harmonic rules if and when they want to represent beauty, even when achieving different final results.

For the same reason it happens that a TG can be beautiful as well as a Brazilian, a blonde as well as a brunette and so on.
And it doesn't depends on beholder eyes...

Arcadius, I don't know if you are impenitent, but reading your posts I don't believe you are the barbarian you said to be, as if you were unable to recognise the beauty...

On the contrary, your last stiff post induces me to think that you might be so much dandy to prefer to locate the beauty in your own eyes than inside the things that you see.

Regardless of bone structures etc., as I've read, the 2 most important things males look for are:
1. symettry(spelling?)
2. hip to waist ratio of .7
Look at Marilin Monroe or Kate Moss, sure Kate is skinny and Monroe relatively vuluptous, but they have the same hip to waist ratio!

So, regardless of race, a guy will like women with the above 2 features the most.  Ofcourse, there are other factors and influence, like softer lips, bright eyes, personality, etc.

"Venus of Botticelli "
Believe it or not, Venus has a .7 ratio!  So does a lot of paintings that are categorized as Rubenesk.

"We are free to dislike Leonardo's Mona Lisa, but the fact that it is a masterpiece is not, and cannot be, on discussion. "
Really?  Why?   Please enlighten me.  Why is it a masterpiece?  Because of social evidence?  Because of the shading done by the artist that creates that subtle smile?  I really don't get your point here.

"If I am starving to death, I can eat shit and feel better, but it doesn't mean shit = good food, obviously. "
Well, if you have never ever had "good" food, then how would you know?  I personally hate fish, others absolutely love it.  Does that mean one of us is a freak?

Balls

Many thanks for that info. If Elaine May also wrote and directed that brilliantly witty movie then my admiration for her knows no bounds. As you say, it is quite scandalously neglected.

Unfortunately, I have a plane to catch and cannot answer properly now. In the meantime, suffice it to say that I doubt if this Platonic ideal of objective beauty (if indeed it exists) can be of any real utility. Except to God, perhaps.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder (beer holder?). Right now I am in the harmony stage. I like a beauty that makes me laugh and seems fun. There are far too many stories of knock-out stunners that are starfish in the sack and bad company.

    Bon Voyage Arcadius,

I don't know much about god's activities lately, and don't know either which god are you referring to, but here you find a list of those that, consciously involved or not, take advantage by the study and application of objective human beauty:

The god of aesthetic surgery
The god of make-up artists
The god of cosmetics industries
The god of hair stylists
The god of fashion designers
The god of fashion industries
The god of men or women magazines
The god of advertising industry
The god of post production photographers
The god of movies TV and theatre producers
The god of models scouters
The god of cartoonists
The god of fitness centres

There are more for sure, the above just to tell the first that jump out my mind, but I didn't mean to forget to mention the god of the artists...
...but I am not sure you would accept art as a real utility.

ComicNihilist,

I agree about your ratios for attraction.
There are some more signs to be mentioned later, when Arcadius will be back with us.
In the meanwhile, I am happy if you agree about the existence of some universal factors.

Universal factors can be "natural" or "agreed".
They are natural when depend on the subliminal part of our mind, the part which work instinctively and without rational control or social/cultural influence.
Being under the influence of our genetic code only, this structure of automatism's seems to be the same for all human been.

This the essential conditions for humans to be able to understand each other, to communicate and develop a language.

When things gets a little more complicated, when we want to communicate something deeper than pain & hunger, "danger" for example, would be better to agree about what is dangerous, and which stage of danger are we talking about, so to be promptly ready for the proper reaction.

Still on your question about Mona Lisa, when we recognise that that work is the result of those special complex of skills that belongs to who knows the rules of composition as well as the properties of the used materials with a technique that keeps the results under control...
well, in this case, we "agreed" to call it art.

Masterpiece is a word which attributes a special quality to an artwork, so now I would like to ask you how do recognise the quality of an item? A car for example!
Well it is exactly the same process for a painting !
You examine the skills behind the product and compare the performance with other similar.

Then, off course, we are free to prefer a Ferrari also if Lamborghini goes faster.
As for food, everybody has his own preferences and parameters.

if you have never ever had "good" food, then how would you know?
As I said in the beginning, some universal factor are conventional (agreed) and so in those cases the ignorance of the "agreement" can stuck you out of the game.
But in the case of food also, there are some natural universal factors, those instincts that make any of us to automatically reject smells and flavours that might hide natural poisons.
Ask to McDonald's marketing department, I am sure they know all the details about it.
