That's certainly a valid conceptual distinction to make, but (as in often in English) it just doesn't accord with usage.
'Bargirl friend' is usually implicit from the context; seldom spelt out.
By the same token, you might well refer to some guy you met an hour ago in a bar as your 'friend'. It would be pedantic to refer to him as your 'casual acquaintance'. Obviously, he doesn't have quite the same status as another guy who's been a bosom pal since the age of 4 and once saved your life in Vietnam.
In general, I think 'girlfriend' implies some kind of ongoing sexual and/or emotional connection. Beyond that, it's up for grabs.

I spelt it "bargirlfriend" quite deliberately. "Bargirl friend" suggests a friend-like relationship with a bargirl and is as valid as saying "my librarian friend" or "my dentist friend".
My lexical supercollider word is intended to convey something quite different however. When the old words don't work, we have to make new ones.
I certainly wouldn't EVER refer to someone I'd met an hour earlier in a bar as a friend. Maybe that's just me, but people who'd give away their loyalty that quickly are suspect in my book. And a friendship without loyalty is no friendship at all.
If it doesn't accord with popular usage, that's not really my problem. There are probably just as many people deluded about an acquaintance they mistake for a friend as there are punters who can't tell the difference between a girlfriend and a whore.

Well, it may become a problem if you demand the same linguistic precision from others as you impose on yourself. Some people prefer to express themselves rather more casually.
Referring to an acquaintance as your 'friend' may be no more than an expression of politeness, drunken camaraderie or whatever. It certainly needn't imply any confusion about the meaning of true friendship, and you're not really justified in presuming otherwise. Nor are you justified in assuming that a guy who refers to his 'TGF' isn't perfectly well aware that the girl's a whore. It's conceivable (isn't it?) that this doesn't bother him especially. Maybe you think it ought to, but then you're not him.
On this forum, many people like to refer to themselves (and the rest of us, or even every punter in Thailand) as 'brothers'. To my mind, that's far weirder than referring to a GFE-partner as a 'girlfriend', but there you go.

The brotherhood of teamsters and many other fraternal organizations are formed around mutual interests. This is accepted usage.
Refering to a girl who can't remember how many dicks she had in her mouth last week, and who wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire if you weren't giving her the benjamins, as your GF, is a little bit more bizarre.

 I am confused now, as I seem to see V-J calling people "brothers" liberally, but will not call some other people friends.

Well, you may have a point about the dicks in mouth - obviously a girlfriend with a terrible memory can cause all sorts of problems. Perhaps we should call these forgetfulbargirlfriends.
But surely people "who woudn't piss on you if you were on fire if you weren't giving her the benjamins" can easily be counted as girlfriends - or even wives - and not just in Thailand. Just because there's a fairytale convention that these dreadful people are supposed to like you, it doesn't mean that they do. You might not be over-enthusiastic about them either, which may well be why you're running around with BGs in LOS and calling similar escapees 'brother'.
