Actually, I'm happy that Smeg and Minder have posted dissenting questions, as it has brought forth a very productive discussion. In the end, I think you have done the right thing, though it has obviously been very painful for you and your son.
My TGF dumped her yaabaa addicted husband within the first year of their son being born. He wasn't exactly the great provider. From the expression on her face when she tells me the story of the birth of her son and the year that followed, it was obviously an ugly situation. She showed me a photo of her ex-hubby not long after I met her (also saw some photos of her past farang b/f's - wonder how many of those are of punters on this board, ha!). She said she was keeping the photo in case, "maybe when lookchai man he want to see what papa look."
Because her son lives upcountry with her parents, and gets the emotional support of the extended family in her mooban, which is a lot, she feels he is doing just fine. I think he is. She has zero desire ever to see her ex-hubby again and doesn't know where he is. He has made no effort to contact his son, and simply disappeared.
By contrast, her aunt, who is in her late 30's, has a teen-aged daughter who lives in my TGF's village too. The aunt lives and works in BKK, and sends money home to support the daughter. The aunt was never in the P4P biz, just went to BKK to get a job as a cleaning lady. The aunt's b/f, who my TGF calls her uncle, has a daughter too, but this daughter stays with his mother. He clearly loves his daughter, he has photos of her all over their little ramshackle place, but this was a case of the parents not getting along with each other, for reasons I'll probably never know. It is a little sad to see his eyes when he looks at the photos, but at least he has not abandoned her, certainly not in his heart. And she knows that.
So there are lots of variations on the Thai single parent scene. The support network of the mooban and the extended family seems to pick up a lot of the slack when it comes to Thai relationships. And I get the impression that the parenting role is distributed across the familly and the village in a way that is very different to what our family structures have evolved to here in the West. Doesn't excuse the actions of a hapless parent, but it does provide a bit of a safety net.
Anway, aircrest, I think you have done right thing, and your thread has prompted me to share some thoughts I have about my own TGF's family situation. Good luck to you.

If I was looking for bull you would get on my list but way down it, there is a lot of competition in here for the top spot, and I might be in with a shout myself, but I would be luck to hit the top 5/6, but I will keep trying.
BTW, sorry not to have met up after that night, I had a great night, but my last 2 nights were rather busy
