Today's Bangkok Post - Outlook Section carries an article on the Thai-Farang couples in Udon Thani.
According to the article there are 60 to 70 US citizens who have married Thai ladies and have settled down in Udon Thani.
The 2 couples that were interviewed spoke very frankly about the difficulties in keeping the relationship alive but concluded by saying there has to be a much greater adjustment made by the Farang.

In my experience all women (was going to say will) cheat on their significant others at one time or another. It's just human nature. 
They don't have to have a shady history. I married a nice respectable girl who turned into a slut!!! So conversly if you marry a slut she may just turn into a nice respectable girl.. JMHO

If your buddy has a good head on his shoulders and a backbone, the odds are no worse than 50-50. Tell him to set the rules early.
If he lets her run the show, she'll conclude he's a chump and play him for one. If he shows leadership qualities, she's more likely to stay in line.
The doom-sayers are a self-selecting group and over-represented in all these discussions. The guys who settle into happy relationships with their TG are less likely to be on pussy boards.

It was a ball park figure. I read a number of times that 90-95% of Thai-Farang marriages go wrong. I then thought of how many people I know directly and indirectly who have been there and whether it failed or not. I then added in a factor for error, my own pessimism and the two or three Thai relationships that on the surface appeared OK but would be doomed to failure as the farang husband thinks he knows everything about Thais and Thailand when in fact knows very little. The 'I married for sex coz I can't get it in the West' factor I added in as well and the fact that the social class the farang is usually marrying into he would not dream of doing in his own country. Also Thai greed for money and placing it as number one in life's needs above all others. I also considered the relationships I had seen when the ex-wife worked in London restaurants and the farang hubbies came to pick up their sweethearts after the night shift and the subsequent arguments (Thai women can feel tired and irritable easily in the West) Plus the Thai ladies who married farangs but still had a Thai husband/boyfriend in the background.
This all reinforced the 90-95% failure statistic meaning a 5-10% success rate. Error percent plus pessimism and I came up with 3%. 5-10% is probably more accurate.
Depressing isn't it ? Even so the failure rate of Farang-farang marriages is now about 67% leaving a success rate of about 33%.
About ten years ago a very wise and spiritual man ( a New Zealand preacher) told me that the 'Powers that be' on the planet wanted to destroy the family unit. This was because they believe they can control people better if they are individuals and not part of a family unit.
He has been accurate on so many other things I have no doubt he is correct. People control (for the 'Elite') IS the name of the game.
There is a thread on the forum that talks about how Thai girls are becoming 'Westernised' with all the worst traits of Western women.
So much seems to be against successful relationships anywhere now ?
