I must have missed the part where this is supposed to matter somehow? Harry

So what, of what they didn't do? While some of your points are technically correct, in some respects, as might be expected, they are also relativistically immaterial, as has been pointed out so well by others. The incredible statement that: "The Thais have this culture among themselves as not to be too good at anything" is both rascist and dumb, and still begs for a legitimate defense (which you have wisely avoided doing) particularly when, what Thailand has accomplished, 'since they came down from the trees', is compared to the 'accomplishments' of its neighbors, Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia, and even Korea, and Vietnam.

Quote: from Vancouver Jay on 8:56 am on April 2, 2004 Nope. - Thailand didn't fight off colonization as much as they were rejected for it. France and Britain recognized the value of a buffer state. - The borders of the Thai state were largely set by France and Britain as regards the portions of Laos west of the Naam Mae Khong and the southern provinces respectively. - The location of the Thai capital was largely determined by the militarily superior Burmese. - The local faith, writing system and high culture are all borrowed. - The architectural heritage is far more a matter of intricate ornamentation than any novelities in construction. - The complete culture is constructed from concepts and practices originating elsewhere. - Master craftsmen? Maybe, but the world no longer runs on bamboo mats and ceramic urns. Thai labor is far less efficient than almost any other manufacturing pool in the world for the things the modern world wants and needs.
Thanks for the imput VJ, It was Thais who made the points to me ! I remember walking around the temples in Bangkok and overhearing a guide say to some clients in English- "None of this culture is actually Thai, it all comes from India." He was of course talking about the temples.

Thanks for making that point - the 'arguments' of how terrible the Thais are at everything would hold a lot more weight if they were surrounded by 'superior' neighbors - yet, seeing as how they are a 'very nice' country, surrounded by sh_tholes, I would think that much of what makes them 'nicer' can be attributed to whatever it is they are doing - and since we are comparing, it certainly is more than 'not being good at anything'. Now, granted, Thailand is certainly no superior 1st world, high civilization by a long shot, but comparatively speaking when contrasting to neighboring countries, they are certainly doing quite a lot better. I think it's more than dumb luck, or blessed intervention by benevolent farang that led to that. Aside, they were building temples and had monarchies when Europeans were still hanging from the trees... Harry
