My approach, tried at two different hotels, was to say this was intended for a 'guest' of mine. One assumed and asked if it was for a wife. They both then proceeded to ask for the guests name. To this I replied forthrightly and directly (with a smile of course) that I had not yet met my guest so it was impossible to provide.
In both cases they either smiled or laughed at the candor yet the subject was broached with sufficient clarity that I was free to monger thereafter.

I would suggest you do not make up a name. Because then they could ask your female friend on the way up to your room for her name and if it does not match, then they "could" ask you to pay for her. Some hotels can be uptight about things like that.
What I do is just tell them that the guest will arrive later and check in at a later date. That is if they even ask. I've never been asked afterwards about having the other person check in.

Let us know how things work out for you. I am sure you will not have problems with the hotel staff. At least I hope not. Unless you are staying at one of the Amari hotels. Then I would suggest you change hotels, because those hotels suck from a guest services and guest friend perspective.

Never stay at that hotel. But ... I believe that's the one close to all the MP's and the night club "Sparks".
I like either the Landmark or Novotel Lotus. Both are guestfriendly and close the the action!! ha ha ha!!
