This is the reason why the girls from Isaan come to work as BGs. Furthermore it needs to be considered that most of the people in Isaan are farmers. Apparently the price of rice did not increase in the last 10 or so years, that is at least what I was told.

Think Korart rates 4th - behind Bangkok, Chiang mai and Hadyai - but actually a nice place, huge big new shopping mall, and good double lane freeway [ 3 hour drive ] to Bangkok - Also on the point re Isarn girls, poverty etc. - not generally known, but of course the majority of people in the area, and i guess it would be almost half of thailands 60 mil. pop. - are rice farmers, that is they have a few acres of family land, they harvest rice once a year, some to eat, and some to sell - thats it for the years work / income - anyway, to exist, they are able to get a government loan, of up to 50,000 bt [ remember the average yearly income may only be 10-20,000 for many of these families] - hence the majority of families in Isarn are in debt, which I guess puts further pressure on the girls to work ....

To elaborate: many of them lose the land and are forced to be virtual sharecroppers or at best hired hands for others -- sometimes working land that was once theirs.

i have mentioned Pira Sudham before.
was nominated for the Nobel Prize and i love his books.
he tells good stories(i do not know if they are his experiences).
i take the books with me to LOS and show the girls and they are thrilled.
many pictures of Isaan and the buffalo's and they love it.

So Pira Sudam is translated into english?
Thinking of it, you guys who live in LOS can help the rest of us out if you know good books etc to buy for an occational read. I brows in the bookshop at the airport upon my departure but some insider tip would surely help. (The best book I have read from that browsing so far is "Air America" - not about LOS and apparently controversial amongs those who participated at the time - but a good read anyway)
