Ideal for who? Her, or you? Or maybe both of you.
And nearly all women trade money for sex one way or another, not just Bargirls. It's just that some are called prostitutes and others are called wives and girlfriends. Counter arguments are that even BGs offer sex for free with their boyfriends, or is that making love? And maybe the boyfriends are only doing it to get their hands on the BGs money that she has earned from the farang.
So things aren't quite as straightforward from other perspectives either.
From both perspectives, but mainly from hers.
You suggest that all women a prostitutes in one form or the other, be it wife or girlfriend.
This is rather a tired apology for visiting prostitutes, but it only supports my arguement, for commercial prostitution offers the punter an escape from this conundrum. It is sexual gratification in exchange for money, but to expect the prostitute to be a surrogate girlfriend sullies the simplicity of the situation. I do not care how many men are getting it for free or otherwise, as it prostitution stands on its own merits.
I was of course being rhetorical when I suggested that BG's would pine for their departed clients. Of course they are faking any emotional attachment, but why is it that Farangs expect this circus of BG's but not even think it possible of their Western counterpart ?
I don't see how BG's behaviour towards their boyfriends is at all relevant. To my knowledge, I am not f***ing them.
I don't question how they spend the money I give BGs, anymore than I do of a shopkeeper. Just because the traded commodity is sex, gives nobody any additional cause to question how the money is spent. Yes, I am certainly snearing at your Victorian values. Like the Victorians, there is a lot of pious talk. However, aren't you the one subjecting the girls to their "wretched" ordeal. Treating them with "respect" in no way ameliorates this. I am personally considerate of BG's because I feel no need to do otherwise, I don't expect a reward of what I think you call GFE. The latter is certainly selfish.
As for enlightening you on the Thai mind, I do not pretend to have any special insights, but I do know that they are governed by the same human ideas that we all hold, but are modified by local culture and customs. I have already posted on research that was conducted into the Thai view on the relationship between money, "face" and personal feelings of self-esteem, but that is too broad a topic to address in reply to your post. As I stated, BG's do it for the money, and why not ?

But I ask you, if you have so much respect, why do you expect of a Thai BG, what you cannot of her Western counterpart ?

There's been much food for thought on this thread, in spite of the occasional incivility 
One more perspective: We are vehemently arguing about this precisely because the GF "illusion" is often - not always, but often - so good in Thailand! Gee, it sure doesn't FEEL like going out with a prostitute, so how should I think about her and treat her? The question wouldn't even arise if our experience in LOS were not somehow exceptional. We keep going back again and again, the cynics as well as the romantics, so these girls are doing something right, and it's not just the shagging, because if that were all it was, then why fly half way around the world? For what we're paying on plane tickets and hotels, we could get upscale call girls at home. No, they (not every single one, but in the aggregate) have something that even the expensive girls back home don't. That's why this forum exists, and why we're having this debate in the first place.
On that level alone, judging merely from our emotional attachment, the vehemence of our opinions, and especially our repeated patronage in spite of great inconvenience and expense, the Thai girls (and let's not forget the service and hospitality industries that support the scene) do deserve respect. Say anything you want, but you're there spending your money, or thinking about it, or planning it!
Sure, there are lies and self-deception enough to go around, on both sides of the transaction. As Aristotle Onassis said, "To separate a man from his money, give him hope." The "illusion" works - not always, but often enough to keep this very special scene alive in LOS - in BOTH directions. They feed our fantasies and we feed theirs. Neither is completely satisfied, but both get enough out of it to do it again.
And yes, the line between illusion and reality is sometimes blurred, even for the girl. It's no use making absolutist statements that claim that one state of mind always prevails in either the girls or the punters. Human beings, even the most simple minded, are far too complex to be reduced to a pat formula.
This brings us to the other kind of respect. In Buddhist tradition, stillness (shamata) is said to lead to insight (vipassana) which in turn leads to compassion. Where there is true understanding, there is love. These girls are human beings who suffer and fear and have hopes and dreams like the rest of us. Sometimes, like us, they act unskillfuly, creating more suffering for themselves and those around them. If the second kind of respect were a question of never doing that, then let's be honest: NONE of us would ever deserve or get any.
But if we think of respect as something that arises from our own insight into the commonality of our suffering, and our desire to alleviate it, and the understanding that I cannot help myself alone without helping the other - that being good to the other is in a very literal sense being good to myself - then the appropriateness and desireability of according respect to one and all becomes self-evident.
This, of course, but a humble opinion from a brother. May you have great enjoyment!

I never said you were one and since you wrote "as an illustration" I think I don't need to explain it to you again.
So if you want to condense my posts into just one sentence then it would be this one : "I reek the faint smell of contempt (for BG's) here." Nothing more, nothing less. Notice how I used the words "faint smell", nothing realy solid, just a bad vibe I get. And some other peoples posts (and the ones you quoted) add to this feeling. So I'm even willing to accept that there could be smoke without a fire here.
And yes, you got "that laser like, incisive insight" right. I try (I'm not HJ who can) to make a laser like sentence. No need to make my words diffuse or read between the lines. I try to mean what I write, and write what I mean. That is no easy task in a foreign language when you also try to get some joke in there somewhere. So I try to choose my words with precision. When I choose wrong I'm not too proud to admit to that. But I don't think I did in this case, since I'm talking about "a feeling", which is ofcourse very personal, on my side of the screen.

Good post!! For the two week vacationer it's important to remember. It's just an illusion that goes POOF when you get on the plane. If you can remember this, it will save you a lot of heartache and money.
For the guy who lives here, it's a different story. The illusion is similar but he doesn't have to leave the illusion and it can be very comfortable inside.
Two years until I enter the living in LOS illusion. Where I truly am "hansom man, sexy man".
