Background and social status? IMHO that's Stickman being a snob cause his missus is middle-class thai. Read Stickman's account of his own wedding and see if you want to be married to that family or not.
My in-laws are poor working class stiffs from the southern factory suburbs of Bangkok - their daughter worked in a factory office till I married her - social status is zero and background is country farm types (Nakon Sawan) - salt of the earth, pure and simple - if they ever tell me the buffalo is sick then I'll be sending the vet, no questions asked. Enjoy.

I think you are right on a lot of points.
Mine is purely how much one will have in common with the girl. Sitting for ages saying nothing except, "aharn aloy" became too much for me.
