Hi Localyokul. Granted, schools certainly look packed in Bangkok. So your post intrigued me into wanting to find out some actual statistics.
Here's a report from The Nation, 2000, in which we're looking at approximately 14% in either university or, just as likely, technical college:
In 1999, 33% of youth between 15-19 worked in the labour market, while 61% were school system and non-school system students, while 61% worked off the labour market. A total 73% of youth between 20-24 were in the labour market, while 14% were in school and 13% pursued domestic work or were off the labour market, Finally, 87% of youth between 25-29 were in the labour market, while 12% were either domestic workers or not available for the labour market and 1% were students.

As the article states, at that time the figures seemed to be rising; there was an initiative pushed by Taksin's regime to try to get more students passing Mattayom 6 (and one hopes, tertiary education as well). However now in 2008 the percentages would probably still reflect a rather small minority. Though, as you point out, not actually a small number of actual students. Heaps of asses in tight black skirts.

Yes, maybe numerically a small percentage of the ENTIRE Thai population goes to University, but that is not really the viable demographic.
Once you exclude adults, the very old, and infants to teenage age, you will end up with a more reasonable population sub-sample - out of which you may find a significantly larger percentage going to University.
You may not have considered the sheer number of Universities in Thailand - and their relatively healthy attendance numbers - I have a feeling that out of those able to go to University, we are not talking about a 'relatively small percentage'. (which is, of course, a term fit for interpretation).
In the US, for comparison, you only have a rather meager 27% University attendance rate - so, not *that* far off from the 14% attendance rate of Thais in 2000 (and which may likely be higher now).
Just some food for thought.

I'm not so sure that 14% and 27% are "not that far off". Sounds like a 92% difference to me. I'm also not so clear on the entrance and graduate requirements for the USA vs. Thailand. I'm a little more knowledgeable about the Philippines where a graduate EE is roughly equivalent to a USA technician in many cases or a dentist is more like a dental hygentist. I don't know if the same is true for Thailand so I could be wrong.

The question is, what percentage out of the qualified and eligible demographic goes to a university - frankly, I don't know, but I have a feeling that when looked at with realistic numbers, the numbers won't be that far off...

Sorry if this annoys anyone BUT the standards of all but the top universities in Thailand is crap.
I have two mates who now work for Thai unis (for low wages!!) and I go with their pinions and examples. However, to get a fair job in Thailand it seems like one needs a "parinya" or some such spelling. OK, Chula, Mahidon, Thammasat, maybe ABAC are good(ish) but try exchanging emails with someone from mahasarakham.
The mates stories of the lackluster lecturers, set ways from 50 yrs back, lack of texts, resources, plagiarism and a whole load more.
Yep, universities are there but the standards....
Bit like the Brits play basketball but...
OK, and us yanks play soccer but...

Doesn't that give us a figure which not only describes a tiny amount of the overall population attending tertiary education, but also describes it as a percentage of the eligible age demographic (even if it has gone up from 2000) ?
Or was your point that we don't know how to translate that into the actual number of students, which could indeed be a lot, because we don't know how many people between the ages of 20-24 there are in Thailand?
I sure see a lot of those students... but, in my personal opinion, I haven't seen enough and never will.
Regarding population, all I've got is from the web's CIA factbook, which isn't enough:
15-64 years: 70.3% (male 22,763,274/female 23,304,793)
Median age: female: 33.7 years (2008 est.)
I left out the males' median age because we're not interested.

OK I did the full monty - drove by kampaeng pet 7 off asok & picked one of the lovely gals one recent eve say 11pm & got the usual 1k5 quote & no guy/pimp in sight not sure if she had one...
She didn't know the way to A-one just like myself just claiming to be 1st timers both of us huh!
Well finally got there & it's looks like decent middle class hotel behind bkk hospital off petchaburi, but then there's the car booths ST charging some 400k incl. condoms I guess (worse than asoke place, but parking miles better!).
Service was awesome close to best of cowboy: french kissing, deep bbbj & heavy action f***s (2x) all in 1500bt (tipped 100bt) - however the babe was not that white skinned under closer scrutuni, but definitely she was politer than her cowboy sisters...
Recommend it? Well why not?
