A note on translators:
My TGF always wrote her letters to me in Thai and then took them to a translator to send them. She didn't know how to use the internet or a computer at the time, so that was the best she could do. She was sending email to several farangs back then (me included) but they were all different, so I assume she wrote each one (she wasn't exactly prolific).
I could always tell which translator she used because one wrote IN ALL CAPS, the other wrote mixed case with better English, etc. I found that they were translating the letters pretty faithfully, but they did of course use stock salutations and closings, but I think those also reflected her letters. (Don't ask me how I know all these details ...  Ý)

My friend who owns a few net cafes charges the girls 500 Baht (translation fee) to write correspondance to overseas boyfriends (for long letters... short one liners are "free"). He does so in English, Japanese, and Chinese. Mostly he just uses templates and adjusts them a bit for each "customer." Just his translation fees come out to about 300-400k a month. Not bad for a guy who isn't even a native speaker of English (I personally thinks it makes the letters even more authentic).
I'm curious what the amount of revenue (to the girls) is coming in as a result of just his emails! Just hanging around his 'secret' condo... a girl might stop by to give him a another gratuity of 500-1000 Baht if she had just received $450 (20k Baht.... the favorite ATM withdrawal amount of BG's with oversees suckers) on top of the email writing fee.
