Firstly... welcome to the forum! ÝI'm not much of a clubber so can't help you on the club scene, but I did notice a lot of female tourists in the Hardrock Cafe. ÝAnd well, women will be women, so there's one obvious choice... SHOPPING MALLS! 
As for the use of the word prostitute.... geez... have we so run out of things to bash newbies with that attack a perfectly polite post because he used the "P" word? ÝI absolutely agree that the word can sometimes be used in a purely negative fashion, this was not the case here. ÝUnlike certain purely demeaning words (i.e. towel head or n*gger), it doesn't HAVE to be insulting or degrading. Ý
I've read so many totally deliberate insults on this forum that I cannot believe we get our collective knickers in a twist because someone referred to a prostitute as a prostitute. ÝMaybe if people started using the bloody word it would lose some (if not all) of it's negative conotations. Ý By jumping down people's throats for the mere use of the word, IMO, you are infact adding to the stigma surrounding the word.
And I have to agree with ABC, I often see posts in here referring to sex-workers in LOS as TG's, now although I know this is not meant offensively, and I have never commented on the use of that word in this context before... I do think that referring to Thai women who do work in the sex trade as being "TG's" could be slightly offensive to the majority of Thai women who don't earn their living through sex work.

Whatever anyone choses to do in LOS (or anywhere for that matter) whether they be on a business trip a vacation or if they live there... Surely if whatever 'it' is they do, as long as 'it' happens between two consenting adults.... then all I can say is I hope they have a bloody good time doing 'it'!

I could not agree more with what Marco said. Nowadays I have more money but much less time than when I was a student. Time is precious now, and I don't want to waste it any longer with endless hours of girl chasing and stupid chit-chat.
If the lady is halfways decent, charming and sophisticated, I don't care if I have to pay for the service. Prostitution - can be a gentleman's choice, especially in vacation in LOS!

I agree totally with you X. Specially on the matter quoted above.
BTW, "prostitution" is the right "one single word" to use to describe such activities. And a "prostitute" is the person that engages in them. I quote from a dictionary:

Yes but what pulls my chain (a little) is that the majority of the Broís on this board do not live in the LOS and one of there main reason for coming here is for P4P. Ok by me BUT because there are many that insist on calling them TGís Tee Rak, Qtees ect it gives a wrong impression.
Many posters talk about how they ìchatted upî ìscoredî ìchasedî ìmanaged to getî Ect as if it was a problem with these prostitutes ñ pay money have f_ck- pretty simple concept if you want to add some day dreaming to it to make it more acceptable to yourself then up to you
However, what you manage to do by not stating or admitting the simple truth is to taint many non working girls with being prostitutes.
You hang around the main areas and meet mainly prostitutes but their percentage is small.
I can tell you of many times when I have met people outside of LOS or just arrived and they really do have the opinion that the LOS= LAND OF SLUTS and also have the opinion that all Thai woman are, have been or will be prostitutes.
I do object to ìTGî or ìThai Girlî being used to describe a prostitute I though that we used BG (bar girl) for that.
You know some of us may have steady Girl Friends here or wives and your outlook on the ladies of Thailand can be insulting. ñ But by using the correct term now and again, you at least show that you know there IS a difference.
And Nokna you are full of Shit on this one ñ you say in your FR about paying the Girls 2000 Baht every time LT or ST and buying drinks, spending 1000ís on flowers taking them on trips, for food, buy clothes for them and their kids and then have the audacity to claim that you sometimes donít pay for play here. You are losing some credibility my friend I just hope that deep down you do not believe your own BS

Firstly, a big "thank you" to Ballsbursting, ABC, X and Smegma for not getting your knickers in a twist over the "P" word. If I knew that is was deemed as an offensive word, I would never have used it.
The reason I used it is because I wanted to refer to all the sex workers including Russians and not just the TGs.
Secondly, I'm a bit dissappointed at Nokna's reaction to my post. Do you usually lose the plot so easily? I've read a lot of your posts and have found you to be interestingly informative and polite. So calm down!
Your reply was no way to treat a newbie. How do you know that I wont be posting here for years to come? I've been saving a lot of money for some time now so I can spend it on my 7 week holiday in your beautiful country(I assume you are from Thailand from your reaction).
Abusing future tourists is bad form mate. You say there is a lot of poverty in the area but still you are happy to give me the 2 fingers and tell me not to come at all! You're basically saying "We don't want your money"
Without tourism, Thailand would be a lot worse off than it is now.
What sort of image of Thai people are you trying to convey?
Anyway I hope I didn't insult anyone or twist anyones knickers too tightly as I would like to meet up with a few of you for a drink at some stage. Nokna - maybe you can drop in too?

I'm not sure that dictionary definitions help us very much. We all know what a prostitute is, and there's no doubt that BGs qualify.
However the word is loaded with negative connotations (at least in English). As Smeg's dictionary shows, the idea of 'debasement' is strongly associated. And it is often precisely these negatives which people wish to stress. As in:
"These women are PROSTITUTES, for God's sake!"
Or Fritz's remark on this thread that that BGs are just prostitutes.
Sorry, but they are not JUST anything. At any event, the ones I know reasonably well are not just prostitutes any more than most of us are just barflies.

Well, if TG is being used to imply that all Thai women are somehow 'available', then yes it would be offensive. Sadly, more than a few farang dickheads arrive in LOS with exactly that attitude.
However, BGs are also TGs. There are many characteristics common to all young Thai women, and sometimes posters just want to be clear that this is what they are talking about rather than something BG-specific.
So, for example, if someone was asking about the BGs' post-shower 'towel' ritual, it would be reasonable to reply with reference to TGs' shyness about their bodies.
But context is all. It is not so much the words we use, but the way we use them which matters.
Footnote: One of the problems with 'prostitution' and 'prostitute' is that these things do not usually manifest themselves in LOS in a way at all familiar to Westerners, and the words can easily convey a very misleading impression. For those reasons, I tend to prefer relatively unloaded terms like 'P4P' and 'BG'.

I agree that using TGs instead of BGs is confusing for the newbies and will let them think it is the same.
Sure BGs are TGs but TGs are NOT BGs.
As other said this lead to think all TGs are available anyway and you can behave with them like with BGs. I have witnessed this kind of behavior many times to the great embarassement of the said TGs (and mine).
Too many are day dreaming on the so called "girlfriend experience" and lie to themselves thinking BGs are finally just regular girls who are victims of their environment and the "no good" thai men.
It is a little more complicated. But in their effort to glorify the BGs they like to call them TGs. This is IMO very offensive because by saying "my BG is a TG", they imply there is no difference.
As for Thai prostitutes you can argue they are not just that, they are human beings with a lot more to offer...etc. So what ? Isn't it the case for all prostitutes all over the world ? They are also human beings with a lot of qualities inside, only they protect themselves more maybe because they suffer more.
If prostitute is an offensive word, it is offensive for all prostitutes, I don't see why you should have a special treatment for Thai prostitutes.
