There are some choices you would rather not make. But if it is the only choice/chance to better you/family you take it. In the rural parts of LOS jobs are very scarce and the ones that are there don't pay much.
Farming rice is very hard, time consuming, dependent on luck/wheather conditions, and the pay back isn't much. If illness or some other calamity strikes there is only the family to turn to. The government is not going to help.
The family, the girls are victims of economic circumstances. Yes they have a choice. In most cases they make that choice to better the family, themselves. This will be the last sacrafice a daughter (oldest) will have to make for the family. Well it's not. It's a vicious cycle.
Usually when I take a girl LT (not very often any more) I ask if I can look in her purse or wallet (pictures). Invariably there will be a couple of receipts where the girl sent money home. This makes me sad. This poor girl is doing this in an attempt to better her family.

No, no, no, you guys got me wrong. I'm didn't mean they should do that, I'm just saying that giving money to the healthy dads and brothers while they sit on their asses and leech off of these girls is WORSE than them spending money on Yaba, gambling (which are bad enough.) I was going for contrast and trying to show that these parents are WORSE than those terrible habbits. I guess I still can't get the point accross. Oh well.
Besides, it should be the sons who should take care of the parents, or atleast all the children should, not with the brothers and fathers drinking the sister/daughter's money away.
I hope you guys see what I meant.
EDIT: And I am not talking about families which really can't support themselves. Only the ones where the girls are thought off as a ticket to an easier life by her family.
