What happens if you come across an email account of a terrorist with plans to blow up a few building blocks? do nothing? No right to invade their privacy right?

BK ,
Both Fastmover & Dr. Love have answered your query . I would add one more point :-
If you inadvertantly came upon a terrorist's E-Mail talking about blowing up something then the correct and most effective action would br to note down the E-Mail address & report it to the concerned authorities telling them what you have seen .
There is absolutely no need and no useful purpose to be served in you getting into that E-Mail account .
BK ,
What's happening ? Are you losing it ??

Spot on, if you stumble upon such an email you've already invaded the right to privacy.

Terrorists plotting to set off bombs and kill people indiscriminately is a public matter. This is everybody's business.

What we are talking about here are private messages between people pursuing their own private affairs. It is nobody else's concern at all.

You know nothing about the relationships between the girl and her clients - all these people are complete strangers to you. You are merely guessing about their motives for sending her money, and in many cases you may well be wrong. You have no idea whether your gratuitous interference would do more good than harm - and even if you did know, it would still be none of your damn business.

So butt out. Just possibly you a have a life of your own to attend to.

Let me put this thought out there.........

Imagine someone leaves a handwritten letter on a hotel writing desk, as may have been done thousands of times certainly in the age prior to the convenience of the email.

It is not your letter, but you must read it, or the person you give it to, since it is a lost letter, must read it, to find out who the letter belongs to.

Inside the letter is written vital information of a damaging sort.  But the code of 'invasion of privacy' has been broken because someone had to read it in order for the person who lost it to be notified.

Just because we now have the power to log out a discovered email account, does that make us any LESS likely to read an open email account than an open letter left at a writing desk.

Personally I do not think the human response of 'take a little peek' is any less a part of our human nature now, than it would have been in the fine old days of hand writing letters.

In other words has technology changed the meaning of 'right to privacy'.

And both the letter and the email are 'left' in areas of public access, NOT in a private home.

Perhaps we should distinguish between different levels of privacy intrusion.

If I accidently open the electricty bill of my neighbour and read it, there is an intrusion of privacy.

If I read a letter to find out to who the letter belongs, there is an intrusion of privacy.

If I discover that the owner of an email account didn't log off and click on the messages to snoop, there is an intrusion of privacy.

The first two cases nobody nobody will blame me. There is no explicit willingness to intrude.

The third case is an explicit intrusion of privacy.True, the email is in public access, but by clicking on the links to messages you've entered private access.

Fastmover ,
Are you now just making up arguments to try and prove your case ?
In the example you have given above :-
-The letter was come upon inadvertantly .
-You are scanning the letter ONLY to find out who it belongs to with the good intention of returning it to that person - and this can be found out by reading ONLY the address ( if any ) , the salutation and/or the sign-off .
-I can see no reason to peruse any other part of the letter - UNLESS invasion of other people's privacy is something that you do as a matter of course .

Looks to me like people forfeit their right to privacy when the leave the letter out or leave their e-mail account open and available to the public domain.  If they are that careless then how can they cry privacy invasion?

I would call it private stupidity on their part.

Expatchuck ,
Just because someone is careless that DOES NOT GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO INVADE THEIR PRIVACY .
From where  did you get the logic that a careless person forfeits his/her rights ?
Every single person in this world has made & will make mistakes and therefore be careless about something .
Someone may have inadvertantly left his car keys on the table at a Restaurant - Does that mean that anyone who finds those keys and steals his car is justified ?
Some country may not have heeded early warnings about terrorist attacks - Does that justify the terrorist attack on that country ?
Someone may have left his children to play in the park - Does that justify some other person kidnapping those children ?

Please think about what you justify - any of the above could happen to you .

Let's compare four cases:

1 - Someone leaves an envelope on the counter addressed to John Doe. You return the letter unopened to the post office or hotel counter.

2 - Someone leaves an envelope on the counter addressed to John Doe. You rip the envelope open to read its contents.

3 - You find out that an email owner hasn't logged out. You do nothing and return to your own business.

4 - You find out that an email owner hasn't logged out.
You click on the messages to read the contents.

Which cases would you approve of and which ones not?

Personally, I don't believe that 'taking a little peek' matters all that much if complete strangers leave interesting correspondence (in whatever medium) lying around. It can't really be justified, but if that's as far as it goes, what harm can it do? Of course, reading your teenage daughter's private diary would be a very different matter, and might have very serious consequences for both of you.

It seems to me that actively intervening in other people's correspondence is far worse than just looking at it.

That said, if you intrude on someone else's privacy because they've inadvertently given you the opportunity, the least you can do is admit to yourself that you're behaving badly. Their carelessness does not excuse your snooping. Ý
