I've been very surprise (& probably very lucky) with all the things I've been able to transport in a checked suitcase, both before the crackdown and now.
Hate to give the wrong sort ideas too, but if you put it on edge at the side of your suitcase, they'll never see it -- will just look like part of the case. As always, YMMV depending on your karma. 
Brought a pocket knife this time, no problem.
