I would be surprised if you can find one BG in a ten thousand (yes, that's.01 percent) that could point to the United States or Africa or China on a map... let alone Norway.
Thai culture is such that the vast majority of them don't even know the full names of their neighbors--generations later...
It is further shocking to know the information (or lack thereof) of the educated or "upper crust" Thais too. Including the history of their language, etc... BUT, they all know where to go for a great psychic reading and what days the lottery is played! lol

Well Woswer let me wow you and let you know in a TG's eye for the most part (minus Boston, NY and the South) the Americans have no accent.
The biggest laugh I get is when a TG says she wishes the English and Austrailians speak better English.
Now I give you that for the most part you can write better than us Amerikan's, but you guys need to loose the accent in order to be better understood or just open the wallet more like the Japanese and TG's will over look your speaking handicap.

In an ill-adivsed attempt to make the world a better place, I actually gave my TGF two folding maps: one is of the USA, the other is of the world. Found 'em in a shop in San Francisco airport a couple of years ago when I was outbound to BKK.
She liked the fact that they were plastic coated and seemed to think they had sanuuk cartoons on them (the cities and so forth were hand drawn in a sort of artsy 3D style). This kept her attention long enough for me to quiz her on where a few countries and cities were. I'd like to say she passed with flying colors, but no one here would believe me, lol. And they'd be right. So I showed her where some of the places were. She was surprised to see how far away Norway looked. She seemed to have no idea where any of the Middle east countries are, including Israel.
I'm not sure if she ever pulled them off the shelf again after that day. Would surprise me if she did, considering how well the Thai educational system instills curiosity and inventiveness...

LOL... as someone who is currently in higher education and has held professional development workshops and presented at conferences in Thailand; I applaud your sense of humor and sarcasm.

I like maps and I've always had a big laminated world map or a globe about. I update them as history marches forward (or whatever direction history marches, if it does march).
Geography Class Summary:
After my repeated lectures and quizzes, I am proud to say that my Thai girlfriend (hi school grad, minimal tertiary) can now identify 3 continents (Asia, Africa, and North America). Within Asia she can identify China, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, India and Japan. In Africa, Egypt, and she knows the Nile and Pyramids are there. In North America, the USA. She has a good idea that I come from the left side (West) of USA which is correct and she knows the name is California. She has heard of Mexico and believes it is near California. She has heard of Hawaii but doesn't know where or what it is, despite me showing her the volcanos on googleearth. She has heard of the Amazon River and knows it is big. I have talked to her a lot about ancient Rome (a pet subject) and I am not sure but she may believe it is still extant, though questionably in Italy. Greece is in Troy with Alexander as far as she now considers it. She knows that Australia is somewhere nearer Asia than the other Caucasian-populated places. In France is Paris and she thinks it would be romantic to go there, or almost anywhere in Europe, wherever it is.
She asked me last week if Iran and Iraq were the same. Understandable question, as the names are so similar. Turkey is near there. She has learned that Jesus Christ came from Israel (and believes Buddha came from India) and that there are many Muslim countries around there fighting... But History is another subject and would require another post.
Overall, I am pleased with her progress in Geography and it's soon hopefully coming to the point of rivalling that of Thai college grads. I have been with her to China (Beijing, the Wall) and Cambodia (Angkor) which greatly helped her consciousness. I hope to take her more places.
But as BB mentioned above, due to Thai Education (that's what they call it) background it's usually myself that has to begin my lessons (that's what I call them). However, recently she chats with her girlfriends through MSN, and there are occasionally people from distant countries on there, so she is once in a while curious about where those places are.

Yeah my TGF thinks I am a f***ing genius as I was able to pick up a map in Thailand and figure out to drive to Hua Hin from BKK. She was really afraid I was going to ask her to do it.
One of the universal laws of girls is they cannot read maps no matter what country they are from. I can think of nothing better than either talking about history or geography that will put most girls to sleep, well at least the girls that we would like to f*** that is.
Yes Mel you have to laugh at every country even your own and not take things so seriously. I tend to look at the good that every country has to offer, except I can't think of anything from the Middle East Oh yeah Oil and pajama outfits.
And speaking of the Middle East and laughing. I am walking down Sukhumvitt and two Middle Eastern woman are all dressed in black and I mean head to toe, fask mask and nose cover. All you can see is their eyes. One stops at a sunglass vendor and tries a pair of dark sun glasses. Then she says to the other. "How do I look"
I wanted to say like cousin It on the Adams Family, but just gave a pleasent smile as I passed by.

I'm wowed that you think that TG's think that Americans have no accent. It might be in the spelling, I can certainly see how Woswer and Wowser sound the same.
