I saw there was some talks last autumn regarding thai ladies trafficking in Australia. Some forums brought it up, and i assume it was reported in Thai media, since it came to attention.
In sweden where i come from, prostitution is illegal. Actually its illegal to pay for sexual services. So its the men who goes to jail, and the ladies gets taken care of by government institutions. So prostitution is low here, even if it does exist of course.
However, i found this extensive report from Human Rights Watch regarding trafficking in Japan.

I have no idea how common this is, and/or how often other offers are cover for this. But IMHO the risk is too great if not know the ppl involved very well to consider any offer to go to Japan.

Want to add that it atleast scared me a lot to read this. And i tend to consider that one go throught this is one too many.
Seems thou that is is not that uncommon, but i have no idea of %-ages or numbers. Scary thou.
