I don't know whether the perception in the UK was that Budweiser was an upmarket beer. All I recall was that it was matured over beechwood for a fuller smoother flavour, or some such guff.
Personally, I think that the advertising slogan should have been "Bud is like love in a punt"; because it's f***ing near water!
Luckily, the Czech Republic is joining the EU now, so supplies of the real Budweiser will be more readily available here. I'm referring here to arguably the World's finest Pilsner Beer which is brewed there.

I couldn't agree more. Some Bros will like the BGs with bigger boobs and bums, but not this punter. If it comes to pass that they all balloon into obesity, I'll just have to track them back to source in Isaan, where hopefully McDs and KFC will not penetrate the market for another couple of decades at least.

I can relate to what you say about the cuisines of other nations as served in America and their idea of what it should be like. I've eaten Indian, Italian and Chinese food in several states over there and it was universally foul. I think that the philosophy is pile it high and sell it cheap. We're incredibly lucky here in the UK that the cuisine of those particular countries is generally quite accurately reproduced, as is Thai food come to that. Indian food is good because of historical colonial connections, as is Chinese food because of Hong Kong. Italian food is good because Italy is on our doorstep and many know how it should be because of holidaying there. I expect that the same holds good with Mexican food over in USA for similar reasons. The food in New England was particularly good when eating the local home cooked stuff. America's national cuisine is very good, but its image is tarnished by association with the junk food.

I like your plan for Cuba. A few million Big Macs and the local militia will be too fat to fight, eh? Good thinking!

Hugh,

Indian food (the UK's national dish) in the UK is nothing
like that served in india. The indians rarely eat meat for a start. Some of the dish's don't even have any sort of historical connection with india such as Balti which developed in Birmingham.

Bud was marketed as a fasionable beer over here without a doubt, just like a whole other host of shitty foreign lagers, f*** me you can pay £3.50+ for a bottle of singha in some restaurants in London. It seems like you can add the word imported to something and it suddenly becomes cool.

It's just the ad guys destroying our minds. Afterall whats the difference between diet pepsi and pepsi max, nothing, and they both still rot your teeth.

Some hot news just in - THEY JOINED IN MAY 2004

and FYI - Mafeking has been relieved.

I'm guessing you are in some hick town in Arkensas sitting on the porch in a rocker with a straw hanging out the side of your mouth - here in the UK BUDVAR has been readily avilable for some years now. WE can ever buy STAROPRAMEN and KOZEL too but sadly not the dark beers.

No offence Hugh - i've just had a stressful day at work and my work-related sarky emails didn't go down to well.

They even have Singha and Chang there too and it's a godsend if anyone is into Mongolian beer or Namibian - honest i'm hot kidding

Glad that you're more laid back now.
I'm in Southampton, Hampshire. (The original ones in both cases). Near to my home, we have one of the biggest Sainsbury's in the UK, which stocks beer from all over the place, probably including Indian, Spanish, Mexican, German, Italian, Belgian, Dutch beer etc. But unfortunately I'm not a great beer drinker and much prefer red wine.
All I know is that American Budweiser is crap, compared the original brew of that name from the Czech Republic. America does have some superlative beers however and some of the best are to be found in micro breweries, often accompanied by some of the best food in the restaurants attached to them.

Hugh, sorry to burst another bubble. But Chinese food in London are craps ( mostly). I have been to London's Chinatown and yes, the best you guys have over there will rate about a 6 or 7 compared to what they have in HK or Taiwan. Do you know most Chinese restaurants oversea were not started by professionally trained chefs ? But started by men ( or women) who migrated to those countries, did not have skills or language to make a living, rent a cheap spot, whip up some food that they eat at home ( or enlist the help of grandma), and they call it a "restaurant". It's only in the last 10-15 years that real good HK restauranters had ventured out of HK to open restaurants in US or UK. But because lack of competitions ( of the finest cuisine), once they open overseas, inadvariably the quality goes down. Simple question. Are most Italian or French restaurants in London as good or better than their native countries ? Yes, there is always exception of maybe a few that are quite ok, but if you want the best Italian or French food, you don't go to New York or London, you go to Italy or France. Same applies to Asian foods in UK or US. So what's my point ? American's best food cannot be found in Thailand. That's why you get Mac's and BK's and KFC's and when is Taco Bell coming to BKK? ( or is it already there ? )

No manowar as per usual you are wide of the mark.
So you've been to china town and you now qualified to comment on the chinese cuisine in the UK. Well great stuff. Please tell us how many you went too 1? 5? 10? 50? all of them?

The thing is China Town is a bit of a theme park most of the restaurants there are just catering for the tourists from the famous wonkeys which is supposed to give the rudest service possible (it's quite rude but the food is very average) to your crispy duck restaurants that serve beer in Kettles after their licensing hours. It wouldn't surprise me at all if you were to go to China town and have a very average meal, it's like many other China towns around the world in that respect. There are however some fantastic restaurants in london's china town but you have to know the one's to choose, for example the Joy king Low.

The most upmarket chinese restaurants in London (I know you like that word) are certainly not in Chinatown if you want to try some of these they include Kai and Hakkasan in mayfair and Mr Chow's in knightsbridge.

As for French cooking well many would argue with you on that as well. For example the top 50 restaurants in the world poll rate the best french restaurant in the world outside france, actually in california. I appreciate that this is only a poll and only worth the paper it is written on but never the less.

You see the thing about French cooking outside of France is that has been allowed to florish and develop away from the more stringent traditions in France. Basically some would argue that there in no longer enough creativity in French indigious cooking whereas outside of the country is is allowed to take on more experimentation and influences, which has spurned the term modern european cuisine.

He then told me that Budweiser (aka Bud) was being marketed in the UK as an upscale American beer (a few years ago). How sad.

It's okay, consider 'Jägermeister' is being marketed to Americans as a 'drink', i.e. booze to consume as an alcoholic beverage -- in Europe it's known as a digestive aid. I'm sure you can guess who's having the last laugh on that one...

Dr. von Quack!

I have friends that love Jagermeister. I laugh because I read somewhere that it was created in Europe during the depression as a rot-gut drink to keep you warm since you didn't have money to heat the house. Bottom line "Rot gut"
