I don't have a definite answer for you regarding dowry as I have no personal experience to speak of. However, I have read on other websites that it could range from as low as 30,000 baht to over 1,000,000 baht. I think it all depends on the girl's family's social status.
I guess if you are a billionaire from the U.S. and the girl is a former Miss Universe, US$10 million is really nothing.

Yurune...... dowry is the way to do it, ok..got a friend though, thats gotten his gf for "free", she was for some reason not comfortable with her family and didn't really had any contact with them, but the chance of getting u'r gf for "free" is 1 2 a 1000 000...really.
my gf sis is married to a Malaysian guy prize for him was 1,5 mill bht, and who's gonna pay the wedding ?... the gf and her family..nonono...forget it, any way it can happen but it's not likely.

Local "dowry" is mostly about "Face" - certainly politicians etc. will let it be known how many million baht they paid ... as for the "farang" - it is not really necessary, and in many instances i know of, none asked for or given, mind you, in the long run, you probably continue to pay/support your wife and her family .... the idea of the dowry is to compensate for earnings the daughter would make/send home, so in theory, once dowry is paid, the family should not be entitled to ask you for anything more, but this of course rarely happens, - remember also, in most cases with foreigners concerned, i am talking of a Tg from a poor, Isarn family. Normal asking price is 100,000 bt - often half of which is given back 'under the table' to help you start your life together, also of course, wedding guests in Thailand give you money, not gifts ... so you should get some back ! apart from "Mun" or an engagement gift of Gold, you probably are also expected to donate some gold to the mother as well .... - Bottom line, if the girl is keen and genuine, you give both her and the mother some gold, make a token gesture of 10-20,000 bt, and point out to both the TG and her family, you will see your girl has a continued allowance/funds that she can send money home if she wants, I think most people would be more than happy. -

And this just came to my mind, my x-gf's brother (thai-guy) married a gf from his village prize 35 000 bht, and the and guess who payed for tho wedding party...yup he did, however thailand is not the only contry on our planet where dowry is the norm....

I'm sure it's there....but I only relate my experiences and the people I refer to...and certainly more than 1 in a million....no dowry....no support.......both rich and poor Thai familis...and these are marriages 7 years up to 25 years....kids...some in Thailand some overseas......but I'm chatting with a Thai colleague about this and I'm getting interesting responses.....in fact I have two TG's arguing about this as we speak....I have retreated to the safety of my PC!!!

"Y" ... keep in mind my facts are based on Isarn, the homes, families of the majority of Thai Bar or working girls. I am regularly in this region - the majority of villages do not have a phone line ... let alone a PC, - what I am pointing out, is that the Thais you would talk to in chat rooms, sad to say, probably have little idea how the majority of their "poor" countrymen and woman actually live/exist - The class system is very much alive and well in LOS !

TPE...I'm not in a chat room....I'm at work....I have one from Chonburi...one from Ubon....one from Udon...and one from Trang.....all arguing...though peace has broken out.....funnily enough...Isaan went dowry...Chonburi....had views that dowry was like an upfront payment to be held in case husband flees the nest....sort of pre alimony...and the southerner said...what dowry?....
Interestingly as I posted before all the marriages I refer to are Non Isaan.......and to my knowledge...no bar girls involved.....
